The ancient fishing port of Whitby lies at the mouth of the River Esk and is ideally situated for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire, with its superb coastline and close proximity to the spectacular North York Moors. Whitby is a charming and atmospheric town of winding streets and hidden alleys, with a picturesque harbour, safe sandy beaches and of course the Abbey, reached by the famous 199 steps.
The garden is very overgrown, and the seating area is dirty and in no condition to be able to sit outside. This was disappointing given we had a couple of sunny days during our stay. Due to the garden and trees being so overgrown this restricted a lot of light going in to the ‘garden room’ The windows in the kitchen do not open. This made the property very stuffy and concerning that this is a health and safety issue in a kitchen. Having previously checked to ensure that a cot and highchair would be provided we were frustrated to find that, upon arrival, no cot had been provided for my 10 month old grandchild to sleep in. High chair filthy and not fit to put a baby in. Cot and high was replace. we had not cooker for three days. Given the property caters for 5 adults we were surprised to find only 2 wine glasses. The image on the website displays a fully laid table, including wine glasses. Due to the lack of glasses, at our inconvenience, we were required to purchase wine glasses. We spent £48.35 at Trenchers restaurant for a take-away. The receipt was handed in to the Yorkshire Coastal Cottages shop as requested by Sykes rep. When we stripped the beds on leaving the property. We found the pillows badly stained and not fit for the bin. The Owner of the cottage offered to pay £66 full and final offer, which we refused in disgust. Sykes then advised we use Third advice. would not recommend Sykes and not recommend Damson Cottage.
Pictures of the cottage in Sykes were very misleading. The outdoor area is quite a steep and dark garden but the worst thing was the rotten apples and moss everywhere. The garden was badly maintained and quite slippery when damp. The furniture was dirty and old making it quite rickety. The table area in the images show a lovely dinner service laid out but the reality was an uneven pub table covered is apples and dirty I. The shade. The house inside is very dirty. The carpets were old and smelly and the bathrooms were black with mould. The place smells and floors are quite unpleasant. All the windows were covered in dead insects and bird muck. Bins were full when we got there. Honestly what a shame. Place could be nice but it’s obvious the owner is not investing in the rental property and making hay.
