Location Details

Set amidst the rolling hills and beautiful countryside, the village of Cardington boaststhe oldest pub in Shropshire – The Royal Oak – an establishment mentioned in the Domesday Book. This wonderful, remote setting is an excellent spot for walkers, cyclists and bird watchers, though the area also boasts facilities for horse riders. The local area is home to the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, Severn Valley Steam Railway, Stokesay Castle, Shrewsbury, Ludlow and the Ironbridge Gorge. The market towns of Church Stretton – known as "Little Switzerland" by the Victorians – and Much Wenlock are both close by and offer a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants.

A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

Reviews

Great rural location within easy reach of Ludlow, Bridgenorth and Shrewsbury. Turnip House sits within a working family farm and appealed to all ages, our party of 10 adults, 1 child and 2 babies ranged in age from 3 months to 60years. We took our two dogs and they were made very welcome too. The property was spacious, cosy and very well equipped. We made good use of the go-carts and tennis court, the games room was great for late night competitions. We stayed at Turnip House during lambing time on the farm, it was wonderful to witness the birth of new lambs and my husband helped to deliver two with owner Sara, a memory to treasure. We pre- booked a food delivery prior to our arrival and this helped us enormously with a large crowd of 10 plus. We also booked Spinney Retreat as an overflow for our party and this worked brilliantly as the properties were just 5 mins walk apart. A really great property that I'd highly recommend.

I have just spent an amazing week here with my family. My 2 and 4 year old grandsons were kept busy and adored every minute. The owner Sarah has really thought the cottages through for all members of the family. Fresh flowers were on the tables when we arrived, there was a toy chest in the lounge for the children, with a new tractor and trailer which went down very well with the boys. The go carts and tractors were also a big hit in the tennis area, as were the tennis courts. The games room was also utilised well especially the table tennis and pool tables. For me it was the ample space available, sometimes photographs can be deceptive but not here there was more than enough space for all of us to be comfortable. One of the best things was the amount of crockery available especially mugs, It meant that we didn't have to put the dishwasher on every five minutes or be washing up! There is also a fridge freezer as well as a larder fridge which were able to accommodate the food from the internet shop. It was lambing season when we were there and in the afternoon when most of the farm duties were finished we were able to go into the barn. This was special for the boys who got to see a lamb being born and were able to feed the lambs that needed to be bottle fed. They got to feed the pigs and hens everyday, and collect eggs when available. We did cheat though and had eggs in our pockets just in case they had already been collected . There are lovely walks around the farm and maps are provided in the information pack. There is a pool and gym that can be hired private at an additional cost. The pool area was like a private spa and was a lovely end to our holiday. The wifi in the cottage was excellent which is good as between us we had several phone networks and not all of them worked. I was able to use wifi calling when I didn't have reception. I would definitely stay here again

Turnip Barn was a fantastic base for our mixed group ranging from 13 to 77 plus two dogs. We enjoyed all the facilities, particularly the tennis court and games room, and there were numerous lovely walks from the door. The standard of the accommodation was excellent - we particularly enjoyed a glass of wine or two on the terraces each evening looking at the lovely sunsets. There is lots to do in the area, all within a short drive. It was very difficult to leave. Thanks to the owners for thinking of everything.

This was our second visit to Turnip House and it was just as fantastic as the first. Superb accommodation, surroundings, scenery and the added bonus of being on a working farm. A fabulous time was had by all.

Rated by Mr May reviewed on 26th June 2016

We loved Turnip House. It was spacious, comfortable and perfect for a family party of three generations. There was something for everyone. The location was wonderful too. Being on a farm we were expecting lots of restrictions but apart from having to keep the dog on his lead, as it was lambing time, we were free too make use of all the facilities. The grandchildren loved it. The family who own the farm couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. Would definitely return.

The facilities overall are excellent and certainly far superior than in any other cottages we have stayed at. We definitely plan on returning.

This is a hidden gem. A wonderful peaceful location set on a working farm. We were accompanied by our daughter, her partner and our two grandchildren, aged 1 and 2 years, they thoroughly enjoyed seeing the animals and the various play activities. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners and the local information supplied was excellent.

My 20 month old granddaughter loved the cars and grandad loved the go-carts and tractors. Everything you need in the cottage - infant toys, board games, books, crayons and cuddly toys. Games room with table-tennis and billiards so ideal also for teenagers.

We were a party of 10 guys staying here - and in the connected Corn House - for a walking weekend. The properties are of a very high standard, very comfortable and in a great location. The owners of the farm are lovely and their two recommendations were great: 1. The local pub in Cardington, which does great food and beer 2. The caterers who they helped me to arrange to come in to cook a 3 course meal on Saturdya night after a long day of walking were superb. We had a delcicious meal and then all fell asleep in front of a lovely hot wood burning stove in one of the sitting rooms. To Howard and Sarah, the farm owners, thank so much from all of us! Ian

Accommodation and location were great. Having a large maturer family this spacious accommodation gave us plenty of room. Additional facilities such as the games room were enjoyed by my sons. It is remote enough to be special but close enough to Church Stretton and the Long Mynd to enjoy the facilities and walking the hills.

The cottage is lovely and very roomy. I loved the environment and animals around the cottage (especially the horses). The facilities were excellent, including the games room and wood burning stove.

Rated by Mrs Garrow reviewed on 24th July 2011

We have just got back from a lovely relaxing stay at Turnip House. The cottage is very spacious with large living room & wood-burning stove, kitchen/ dining area, two double bedrooms (1 en-suite four-poster) and two twin rooms, utility area, two fridges, separate bathroom with roll-top bath. We had two patio areas with table and chairs and a BBQ. The cottage is one of 3/4 on a working farm, with lovely views over the surrounding hills. One of the highlights for me was being surrounded by the lovely animals, especially the horses and chickens. We fed the pigs and horses daily and collected fresh eggs from the chickens. It was surprisingly very peaceful. There is also two games rooms with pool table, table tennis, darts, table football etc. They are also building a large indoor badminton/ tennis courts at the moment (though we were not in the slightest disturbed by the noise). There is a 2 mile circular walk within the farm grounds, which was very pleasant. Mobile phone reception is not great in this area, but there is a pay phone within the cottage if needed. As we were staying for a family birthday, we booked a function room at the Royal Oak pub in Cardington for a meal one evening (25 people), which is a 2 mile walk from the cottage. The meal and service were both very good and we were allowed to decorate the room and bring our own cake for desert. Overall I cannot recommend the cottage highly enough and would love to come back for another visit, the only slight negative is that there were a few cobwebs in the property that perhaps are difficult for the cleaners to reach because of the high ceilings. We also found that some noise came through the walls from next door into the first floor double bedroom.

Second time for us at the cottage and it was even better this year. We had a fantastic week the cottage had everything we required and more. The owners go out of their way to make sure that every detail is provided for. With the added benefit of a new Sports hall being built this property will be excellent all year round. Walking is very good in the area as well as other activities, mountain boarding, quad biking, go karting and cycling - we had a full week.
