Gilson is a superb end-terrace cottage set on the site of the Freshwater Biological Association, one mile from the village of Far Sawrey, close to Bowness-on-Windermere. This cottage sleeps two people and has a king-size double, a shower room and an open plan living area with a kitchen, dining area and sitting area with balcony. Outside there's roadside parking for one car. Gilson is a wonderful, luxury retreat with plenty to do within this part of the Lake District National Park and in the wider area.

Named after Hugh Gilson, a former FBA Director, known for his contribution to the association, this wonderful cottage has an open plan living area, delightful bedroom and bathroom, all set in peaceful surroundings. An ideal romantic base for a relaxing holiday. The FBA promote freshwater science through a number of ways, such as innovative research, science projects, training courses and workshops, maintained specialist scientific facilities, national and international scientific meetings and publications. The village of Far Sawrey has a pub/restaurant, whilst Bowness, with all its shops, restaurants and leisure facilities, is just a short distance across the lake by ferry. Also close by is ‘Hill Top’, once the home of Beatrix Potter, and Hawkshead with its picturesque 17th century cottages. Footpaths lead from the grounds to the village and Claife Heights - a noted beauty spot of forests and tarns. Watersports are close at hand on Windermere, along with Lake Cruises and the majestic Wray Castle to admire. Fishing can be enjoyed on nearby Esthwaite Water and, of course, fell walking.

We stayed here for a 3 nights in March 2020 along with our young baby, for 2 out of the 3 nights we had no heating our hot water. Paid £360 paid and offered £40 compensation, after chasing for a response numerous times. After reading other reviews since staying here appears this is still happening with other guests.
