On the other side of the lake, you can explore Beatrix Potter's former farmhouse, Hill Top, now owned by the National Trust, hike Claife Heights and enjoy views of the lake from the top, wander through the National Forest at Grizedale, stopping for an adventure-filled afternoon of zip wiring and traversing tree tops at Go Ape, or take on the challenging Old Man of Coniston peak, boasting picturesque views across Coniston Water. Close by is also the foody village of Cartmel, famous for Sticky Toffee Pudding and the L'Enclume restaurant. Venture into the market town of Kendal, known for its excellent shopping facilities and hill top 12th century castle ruins that overlook the town.
