Location Details

The small village of Lettermacaward is on the beautiful west coast of County Donegal, and is home to shops, pubs and lovely sandy beaches. Dooey Beach is remote and secluded, and has great choppy surf, ideal for watersports. A fantastic little village all year round.

The West of Ireland conjures up many images; thatched, whitewashed cottages, a flock of sheep on a narrow road, an emerald green field with a stone wall, or the Atlantic waves crashing into towering cliffs and rocky shores.

Reviews

Just returned from a weeks stay. The cottage is wonderful, and the owners need to be congratulated on returning an original Irish thatch to its former glory. Must admit that the review written by Passport635230 on the 2 June 2019, very nearly put us off. Do please ignore, it is malicious and vexatious, and I have no connection with the owners whatsoever. The cottage is close to wonderful beaches, for isolation try Dooey or family Narin. Similarly bars , Elliot’s a couple of miles away and for those who fish a couple of salmon rivers and of course the sea. Throughly recommend, and happy to be contacted if any queries.

After we booked the cottage, came across the previous review and were worried but have just arrived at Tar Ar Ais and have to say the previous reviewer is talking rubbish. The cottage is 500 yards from the main road, which isnt exactly busy, Sweeney's hardware store is small by anyone's standards, the views are delightful and everything works fine indoors. I would not normally write a review so soon after arrival but want to contradict a malicious review without delay.

We booked to stay here for a week in April 2019, attracted by the description indicating a rural idyll and attractive cottage. Well....what the photos don't show you is that the cottage is just off a main road; it's very close to a big ugly hardware/ DIY store currently getting an extension built; the 'view' out the back is marred by a what seems to be a blockhouse bunker with some kind of exhaust vent in it (very close to the outdoor sitting/ eating area); the row of houses opposite, one of which has a rusty cement mixer and rusty tipper truck in their front garden (that's your view), and the view out the front of the cottage includes a big concrete cattle shed with corrugated steel roof....When we arrived, there was lots of workmen in the other cottage beside this one. Ours had just been freshly painted and the mess they made of it was clear...the smoke detectors had all been painted over and so didn't work (worrying in a thatched cottage with open fire and two young kids), the cooker didn't work properly, the rear door didn't lock properly, bathroom fittings fell off the walls..no light bulbs in the lights. I then had to help the elderly electrician who'd been booked in by the owner to sort these things out before we arrived but didn't get there till late evening on the day of our arrival. None of the smoke detectors could be fixed, so all had to be disconnected from the mains, the cooker got fixed eventually so we could feed the kids after all, light bulbs didn't fit the light fittings......We had to cut short our holiday anyway for other reasons besides the cottage not being up to standard, but I couldn't really recommend this. I would avoid it.

A beautiful cottage in lovely surroundings, it had everything we needed and was warm and cosy. In a good central location for exploring Donegal.
