Location Details
Swainby is a settlement in the Hambleton region of North Yorkshire. Swainby is located at the north-western corner of the North York Moors National Park. The characteristics of the settlement and the surrounding area consist of traditional Yorkshire dry stone walls, hills, sheep, heather and moorland. The town is adjacent to the ruins of Whorlton Castle. In the 19th century the housing of miners who worked the neighboring hills for ironstone and jet led to an extension of the village. Swainby features two public houses, The Blacksmiths Arms and The Black Horse.
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

As a group we have been hiring holiday cottages in early November for over 20 years and this one is up there with the best. On arrival, we were greeted with a "welcome pack" of essentials such as tea/coffee/milk etc. and a lovely homemade lemon cake. After we had been there a while, the owners (who live in an adjacent village, popped in to ensure everything was OK and gave us some tips on local pubs/walks etc. as well as making sure we had their phone number in case of any problems (it wasn't needed). Rose Cottage is a very comfortable place to stay, chairs and beds are very comfortable and the heating can be adjusted in each room. Having tow lounges (each of which could comfortably accommodate all seven of us) gave the place a spacious feel. A well equipped kitchen topped it off. There are a couple of cottages we have returned to over the years and this is likely to be another of them
