Location Details

Three miles from Sowerby Bridge in the Ryburn Valley, the Calderdale village of Ripponden is situated in a rural Pennine area. Traditional stone-built cottages make up the majority of the village, which also has a few excellent pubs serving food and real ale, a neighbourhood supermarket, and a small high street with shops, cafes, an award-winning restaurant, takeaways, and other establishments. The River Ryburn meanders through the middle of the village. In the neighbouring hills are charming historic weaving villages that were situated in the centre of the Industrial Revolution. In terms of archaeology, the region is noteworthy for its Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Roman road remnants. The Cat Stones are a collection of ancient round barrow burial mounds that may be seen on Rishworth Moor, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and home to numerous unusual animals. The annual Rushbearing Festival, which takes place in the fall and features dancing groups from throughout the nation, including Morris Dancers, is another notable event in Ripponden Village. Hebden Bridge, a vibrant, bohemian town nearby, is home to markets, bistros, restaurants, a local movie theatre, art galleries, and the Rochdale Canal. You can reach the Parsonage Museum, which honours the illustrious Bronte family, by taking a beautiful vehicle journey across the moors. To reach "Last of the Summer Wine" country, take a short drive in the opposite way. There are numerous National Trust sites and listed buildings nearby. Steam train aficionados must visit the Haworth region to experience the flourishing Worth Valley Railway.

From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

Reviews

We have just returned from a very enjoyable week's stay in this idyllic cottage - perfect for a couple with a little dog. The cottage is charming with great views and has its own private, enclosed lawn area - perfect for our (4-legged) Boy, Charlie.. The owners were very helpful; they have put a lot of thought into making their guests welcome with lots of delightful little extras. We were particularly taken by the Hotel Chocolat truffles on each of our pillows! There are lots of good eating places close by and we particularly recommend the legendary luncheon buffet at Old Bridge Inn in Priest Lane at Ripponden. Although it was a winter break for us, we enjoyed every day of our stay - visiting Hebden Bridge, Halifax's magnificent Piece Hall, Shibden Hall grounds & café (the Hall was itself closed till March but it's still well worth walking around the grounds). We enjoyed a morning matinee at the wonderful old Rex Cinema in Elland. And we also saw so many of the locations featured in the BBC's 'Happy Valley' drama serial! Most evenings we were just so happy to relax in our warm and cosy Prospect Cottage. And our ageing little dog Charlie enjoyed it just as much as us! We heartily recommend this cottage.
