Location Details

Known as the 'Centre of Britain' this small market town is well served by a range of local shop and excellent pubs. There are 3 castles within a few miles of Haltwhistle; Blenkinsop and Bellister are ruins, but the 14th Century Thirlwall Castle is well-preserved and worth a visit. Five miles away is Housteads Roman Fort, the best preserved Roman camp on Hadrian's Wall. Nearby, the parish church of Holy Cross is ancient building, which may date to the 9th century, and within it is a preserved 7th century water stoup thought to have been used by St Paulinus. Haltwhistle was granted a royal charter to hold a market in 1306 and the market is still held today. The town prides itself on being 'The Centre of Britain' and it makes a fantastic location from which to explore Hadrian's Wall country.

Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.

Reviews

We've just spent a wonderful week at Crescent Cottage, Haltwhistle. The cottage was beautiful and we didn't want for anything. Sue, the owner, was very welcoming and gave us lots of useful information about the area and visitor attractions. Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum is well worth a visit and is only a short drive away. The train stn is a 5 min walk away with easy access to both Carlisle and Newcastle. Would definitely recommend Crescent Cottage and would love to come back again in the future.

We made our 6th visit to Crescent Cottage in August and had a lovely peaceful holiday, even the weather was with us this time. Perfect location for walks to Hadrian's Wall. Lots of good places in Haltwhistle and nearby to eat and drink. Always receive such a good welcome back from Sue & Nick.

Rated by mikep62016 reviewed on 4th October 2017

Loved this quirky upside-down house, with its friendly hosts. It's a two minute walk into town, which has plenty of pubs (recommend the Black Bull) and eateries, and a two minute walk to Sainsbury. The two and a half mile walk along the Haltwhistle Burn is beautiful (and flat) and from there is a short walk across a field and down the road to 'Cawfields' where you can join the walk along Hadrian's wall (definitely not flat). The house is well equipped and very comfy, so we enjoyed relaxing evenings after our days out exploring.

Really enjoyed our week at Crescent Cottage. We had a warm week and the upside down cottage meant that the bedrooms were cooler and a good nights sleep assured in a bed with a great mattress. The cottage was immaculate and very well equipped. Lovely outdoor sitting area overlooking the owners pretty garden. The owners were very welcoming and there was a cake and some milk waiting for us. We will be back - we loved it!!!! Great walking at Hadrian's Wall with an excellent local bus service to several locations along the wall. Haltwhistle has a number of pubs and restaurants as well as local shops and a couple of Supermarkets.

Rated by Kevin K reviewed on 2nd June 2017

Firstly Haltwhistle is a pleasant surprise with good shopping, eating and drinking facilities...in fact just about everything you could need with two supermarkets, pubs, food and takeaways. There is also a railway with a regular train service!! The area has gorgeous scenery with historical sites and towns and superb walking country. Hexham, a short drive to the east is well worth a visit with its abbey, theatre and larger shops. In all the cottage, Haltwhistle and the area make an excellent package and having sampled it we will be back for more.

We have just returned from our 5th visit to stay at this lovely peaceful cottage. It is perfectly located for visits and walks along Hadrians Wall. We have always received a very warm welcome from Sue & Nick, who have a wealth of knowledge about the local area and places to visit, and recommendations on where to eat. This will certainly not be our last visit!!

Excellent location, very convenient for town, Hadrians Wall and beautiful Northumberland countryside. Very comfortable and spacious cottage. The patio area was lovely with views of the very pretty garden with lots of bird life. The owners next door were very warm and welcoming with lots of helpful tips and advice.

Simply can not fault the cottage and service of the owners. Spotless and exceedingly comfortable. We used the cottage as a base for walking Hadrian's wall and cycling. It's location was perfect. Lots of places to eat locally and plenty of shops to cater for yourself within walking distance. Yet it was an oasis of calm. Can't recommend highly enough. The Dewars of the Rogers and Dewar clans.

Crescent Cottage is situated in the centre of Haltwistle, which has everything you'll need, plus an excellent pub. The cottage is ideally placed for exploring Hadrian's Wall and is clean, quirky and full of character. The owners were very nice and gave us a warm welcome.

A fantastic cottage run by a very helpful and friendly host. Personally we felt the cottage was perfect for a holiday in the UK in November when the weather is cold and wet. Providing a washer and dryer made life so much more comfortable as we were out every day either mountain biking or walking. Also, even though the cottage is in the town it was so quiet.

The cottage was much bigger than it appeared on the outside. It was a really lovely bright, warm, comfortable place and really close to all amenities yet lovely and peaceful. The owners couldn't have been more helpful and provided loads of really useful information. The weather was fantastic over the Easter weekend which was a bonus and everywhere we went people were really helpful and friendly. The holiday was absolutely perfect.

Sue and Nick gave us a very warm welcome and were very helpful. Nick told us a lot about Haltwhistle and surroundings. Sue baked us a delicious chocolat cake and there were fresh flowers in the living room of the cottage to welcome us! The cottage is very clean (we love that!) and had all the creatures comfort. Books to read and lots of leaflets with information about interesting places to visit are availlable in the cottage. All so well taken care of. A joy to stay in! Just around the corner there is a supermarket. In the cottage all you need to prepare a wonderful meal. And if you do not feel like cooking there are other possibilities nearby also for Take In Meals. Haltwhistle an ideal place to start exploring Hadrian's wall. A lot of very interesting places nearby. We had a wonderful time in Crescent Cottage!

The location was great for seeing Hadrian's Wall sites. Plenty of shops in the village for everyday needs as well as takeaways. Good pub food at the Black Bull. The house was clean and comfortable, a real home-from-home. Easily the best holiday cottage we have stayed in. The owners were friendly and helpful.

Rated by Ms Boyd reviewed on 10th September 2014

Definitely the best rental property we have ever used. The house was immaculate but also very comfortable and cosy. Perfect for a family to enjoy. The garden was just lovely and the owner makes you feel very much at home. The village was also ideal for a holiday spot; very small but with two butchers, grocery stores, pubs so everything available and within walking distance. Beautiful spot in rural England that we would highly recommend to anyone!

Rated by Mrs Rittenhouse reviewed on 19th August 2014

I was unfortunate enough to be ill whilst on holiday this year. However, if one had to be ill on holiday Crescent Cottage was the place!! All the home comforts, always warm, in spite of windy, rainy weather. The owner, who lived next door could not have been more helpful. The location was great for seeing the Hadrian Wall sites and local buses and trains travelled from Carlisle to Newcastle via the town. Plenty of shops for everyday needs as well as many eating/takeaway places.

We were made very welcome by the owners who could not have been more helpful and charming. We would highly recommend Crescent Cottage and we hope to be going back as soon as we can escape again!

My family thought this was a lovely cottage to spend a week in. The upstairs living space was great - very comfortable and spacious. The village was nice with a decent pub, chippy and a supermarket close to the cottage. There was also indoor play area for the children on a rainy day. Hadrians wall was just a few minutes away by car - and we also enjoyed a day in Carlisle. We enjoyed meals at Twice Brewed and the Milecastle.

I've stayed in Crescent Cottage a number of times, usually with only my husband, but once with my parents and daughters. Each time I go back it feels like home from the first moment. It's really comfortable and clean, with a great kitchen with a drying rack - very useful if you've been out walking in the rain. There's a very pleasant view over the garden from the window. The cottage is right in the middle of Haltwhistle within easy walking distance of local pubs, takeaways, shops etc. It's a perfect base to explore the wonderful countryside and Hadrian's Wall. Totally recommended!

We parked the car on the day we arrived and did not use it again until we went home. Great walking straight from the door to Hadrian's wall. We used the train to visit Newcastle and Carlisle. The cottage was warm and cosy. The town location was great, but it was very quiet. Shops, takeaways and pubs all just minutes walk away. We had a great week and would love to return.

The owners were on hand to welcome us and for any queries but never intrusive. The cottage was warm, spacious and well equipped with an attractive outdoor seating area for warmer periods of the year. The location was great - quiet but close to the facilities of the town which include a Tesco store, good range of other shops, pubs, take-aways and places to eat out. We were walking Hadrian's Wall in day stages over our week and chose Haltwhistle for the transport links because it is on the railway line and also served by the AD122 seasonal bus that calls at points along the wall.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 2nd December 2009

The cottage is situated next door to the house of the owners who were friendly and made us welcome. Upstairs is a large, light and pleasant living room, a nice bathroom and a well equipped kitchen. There is also a terrace overlooking the owners' beautiful garden. The only drawback is that, because the cottage is built on a sloping site, the bedrooms are downstairs and built into the hill, with the result that they are a little darker than we would have liked. The location is good, quite close to the centre of Haltwhistle but on a quiet street. Haltwhistle itself is pleasant, although a little underwhelming, but the nearby countryside and Hadrian's Wall are wonderful.

The owners were extremely friendly and welcoming, the cottage was fabulous and the "extra touches" of milk, a cake, fresh flowers, tea, coffee and a TV magazine were very much appreciated. We would have no hesitation in highly recommending this cottage. We had a wonderful holiday and would certainly go back.

A good base from which to tour the area on foot and by public transport, nice, friendly owners but we were left alone to enjoy a peaceful holiday.

One of the best holiday cottages that we have stayed in, this cottage is great for walkers and just relaxing. More than just a place to stay, all the little extras made you feel welcome.

Pint of milk in the fridge, newspaper and Radio Times, as well as friendly welcome from owners made us feel at home. Very comfortable beds, incredible clean, very pretty flowers.

Crescent Cottage was perfect for us - in town, but quiet, near to all the shops and the Black Bull Pub. The owner met us at the train station, brought us to the cottage, and settled us most comfortably. She provided a warm welcome and food essentials. Haltwhistle is an excellent site for walking. We also joined the Haltwhistle Wednesday walkers for one of their local walks. I hope to return to Haltwhistle for the Walking Festival. if I do, Crescent Cottage would be my first choice.

An absolutely super holiay cottage. Ideally placed for 'Roman' around. A very warm welcome and friendly hosts. One we'll go back to in later years.

I would like to say a big thank you to the owners. On our arrival there was milk in the fridge, a cake and tea and coffee available, which after a long drive was very much appreciated. The cottage could not have been better and the information pack provided was simple to understand and very informative. It made planning the next days activities very easy. We met the owners a few times and they very much helped us get the most out of the area with their suggestions. So all in all we could not be more happy with the service that Sykes provided and the lovely cottage, welcome and advice from the owners. Thanks all for helping to make it a very enjoyable holiday!

The cottage was as Excellent as mentioned. The hosts were most helpful and took the time to advise on not only the cottage but the surrounding area and attractions. They took great pride in the presentation of their very clean and comfortable cottage but also the outstanding countryside which can be explored at length.

Spotless throughout. Very safe for our children - ages 6 & 3. More local amenities than any other village in the area. Walking excellent.
