Location Details

The lovely town of West Burton, nestled in a hollow of the little-known Walden Valley, is a wonderful location for a peaceful holiday. This charming, ancient village is situated in beautiful countryside in the heart of Wensleydale. Composed of old stone cottages surrounding the famous broad village green, this is a popular retreat amongst walkers looking to enjoy the Dales with their wonderful views and small but spectacular Cauldron Falls - a feature that was captured about by the artist, J M W Turner. Also fringing the green is a traditional village pub which serves good food, whilst there is an excellent range of amenities in the nearby market towns of Hawes and Leyburn.

From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

Reviews

I have booked this cottage 3 times as it is a perfect “getaway” being virtually “off grid” yet sporting all the usual home comforts. The views from the property are wonderful and the extensive grounds boast not 1 but 2 streams! The owners live on the other side of the Pennines but they are only a phone call or email away and they respond promptly, unlike Sykes!

What can I say, fab find in beautiful surroundings. Very well equipped, spacious and so clean. Lovely personal touches from the owners. Excellent spot to get away from it all. Perfect retreat

This was a lovely home to stay in. The location was perfect and beautiful. It knocked my socks off!

Rated by Mrs Hobbs reviewed on 3rd August 2016

The location of this cottage is just amazing. Surrounded by the beautiful Dales with views from nearly every window. The cottage itself is superb with the feel of tradition mixed with modern comforts. The garden is an ideal place for a picnic or to let the kids run wild.

Rated by Mr Gorton reviewed on 9th July 2016

The location of Cowstonegill is perfect for a relaxing stay and the outlook is stunning. I don't think I have been to anywhere quite so tranquil, and that includes many other parts of The Dales. We enjoyed watching 'the girls' [cows] from the farm across the fell go up for milking on a morning and then again later in the afternoon. Beautiful walking wherever you go in the area. Cowstonegill is a very impressive and well tended property and we were thrilled to have found it - much thought has been given by the owner in furnishing and equipping the house. Perfect in every way

Rated by Miss Wheatley reviewed on 11th June 2016

Cowstonegill is a wonderful house. It was warm, comfortable and superbly equipped. It is in such a lovely setting too. The owners have created a real home from home. We want to go back for a longer stay.

Cottage was lovely to come back to after a good walk in this beautiful area. It is warm, welcoming, spacious and has lovely views across a quiet valley, with its own grounds to explore as well. There are thorough instructions to help you get the most from your stay, and all was spot on! It exceeded our expectations in every way.

Huge cottage, absolutely beautiful, liked the fact necessities were provided. All the light fittings worked. Loved the table tennis and table football. This was a gorgeous property with quality furnishings throughout. A great back garden for football and bunny rabbits everywhere. Loved it.

Everything! The cottage was fantastic and suited our every need.

Rated by Mrs Stanley reviewed on 14th July 2014

The cottage was perfect, beautifully furnished, and clean. The supply of tools for a keen cook was excellent (the only thing missing was an electric whisk.). The owners and their local contact were very helpful on the two occasions we needed to contact them. The view of the Dales was outstanding and we had the feeling that we were in a much-loved home that the owners wanted to share.

A very comfortable cottage in a lovely location with walks straight from the door.

Rated by Mrs Ryan reviewed on 22nd May 2014

This house is the best equipped cottage we have ever stayed in (that's in 25 years of self catering cottages). The cottage was in an outstanding location and the views were amazing.

Cowstonegill is a fantastic property tastefully furnished to a high standard in a stunning location. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday in the Dales, with beautiful walks and magnificent views, then look no further, you wont be disappointed. This was our second visit and we hope to return again soon. Highly recommended.

The cottage is gorgeous, and in the most tranquil setting imaginable. The views from every window are stunningly beautiful. The cottage itself is equipped to a high standard, and lovely and cosy even in the wind and rain. It provided an ideal holiday for two families with small children. Just perfect.

An excellent property in a superb location!

Rated by Mr Hack reviewed on 17th March 2013

This is a beautiful old house, which has been lovingly retored, decorated and furnished to a very high standard. The village is picturesque and we spent a really happy evening at the village pub playing in the Christmas Darts challenge (we gave some of the locals a run for their money but ultimately we were soundly beaten!). Our only reservation for a winter let is the access- it really is across a field: the track barely justifies the word, and in snow it would be a problem. It would also be impossible to get food - let alone people - to the house without the use of a tractor in the snow!

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 12th February 2013

The cottage was very warm and comfortable with beautiful scenery from the bedroom windows. It was very well equipped and there was generosity of spirit- a lovely Christmas tree, a welcoming bottle of wine and chocolates, a really nice atmosphere. We loved the village pub too!

Rated by Morris reviewed on 29th December 2012

The last mile or two may be long but this wonderful house is worth it. A superb character farmhouse in a wonderful setting. A cosy, secret retreat. Make sure you explore the grounds down to the river. The games room was a bonus. Highly recommended.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 5th December 2012

Very well equipped kitchen and very comfortable beds. The wood burning stove drew well and heated the room quickly. Wood was provided for chopping plus wine and chocs on arrival! Beautiful setting.

Rated by Mrs Ryan reviewed on 12th September 2012

Cowstone Gill is a lovely cottage to get away from it all! Set in glorious scenic location next to a stream, it has it all! The cottage is equipped to a high standard, especially the kitchen, which is of true farmhouse size and style. having two staircases and bathrooms, it is ideal for two separate couples or larger families. Furnishings are comfortable downstairs with an excellent log burner for colder times. I can highly recommend this super cottage and have already booked a second stay!

Rated by P and H reviewed on 4th September 2012

We enjoyed its rural position, plus the outside space. The size of the property was also good.

Rated by Mr & Mrs Bates reviewed on 27th July 2012

Everything we needed was in the cottage. Peaceful location with lovely views & walking from them door.

Rated by Mrs Griffiths reviewed on 20th June 2012

The cottage and setting in one of our favourite parts of the world is perfect. You feel at home straight away even though there is plenty to explore inside and outside of the property. The cottage is possibly the best appointed I've ever been in and the wine and chocolates on arrival were a very nice touch. Despite the cottage being nestled on a private hillside well away from it all, the villages, walks, abbeys and castles of Wensleydale, Swaledale, Nidderdale and Upper Wharfedale are only a short drive away from the cottage, allowing you to see the best of the Dales with a ridiculous amount of ease. In short one of the best holidays we've ever had!

Rated by Mr Mcguigan reviewed on 12th March 2012

Immaculate accommodation, very well equipped and in a lovely secluded location.

Rated by Mrs Patterson reviewed on 9th January 2012

It's in a beautiful location, we were able to relax and enjoy our time together. The house is equipped for everything, warm, welcoming and spotlessly clean. Although the house is remote, it is within easy access to both the beautiful villages of Hawes and Leyburn. We would strongly recommend this holiday cottage to anyone looking to switch off from the world and enjoy the many wonderful walks in the Yorkshire Dales.

We sated at Cowstonegill for a week at the end of Sept into October and could not fault it. Being in the tourism business ourselves we do tend to be a bit fussy but really found it to be all we wanted and then some.... Location and scenery is fantastic as long as you do like to be "out in the sticks" and the house itself was warm cosy and very well equipped. We (2 couples) loved the 2 ends of the house which gave us space and privacy. The walk into the village either along the road or via the footpath was superb with lovely views and the village of West Burton provided all we needed with shop great butcher and very welcoming pub serving excellent food. If we return to the area we would stay there again and would highly reccommend it to anyone. Best ...the setting Worst...can't think of anything.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 3rd December 2009

This old farmhouse has been so tastefully renovated since we last stayed 15 years ago, such that the comfort and amenities have greatly improved without spoiling its unique and utterly delightful old-fashioned charm. We love the quiet dale, the friendly farming community and the wildlife - and local meat from the West Burton butcher is to die for! We were received with great warmth by both the Methodist and Anglican churches nearby, and the whole area must be as near as one can get to heaven on earth! What a wonderful family holiday!

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 2nd December 2009

Your brochure doesn't do justice to Cowstonegill. The approach to the cottage was spectacular and the cottage itself far exceeded our expectations.
