Fawber Cottage, Horton-In-Ribblesdale

A quiet retreat in a good place to make as many walks as you want to. A nice garden, to sit, sip tea, read a bood, enjoy the views. Morning sun ... always great when the others are still asleep. Spaceful bedrooms, spaceful living room, and spacious kitchen. Tumble dryer in barn (which is handy when it's raining and you still want to dry your clothes quickly). Second fridge, but first one is good enough. Woodburner, Comfortable house, felt 'good'. It's old/traditional. One can walk into Horton in Ribblesdale easily (café, pub, hotel). Starter pack with tea, coffee, oil, herbs/spices. Good selection of pots and pans. Good working oven/cooker. What could be better? Well, when there are six people staying it's a bit of a puzzle to work with onely one bathroom (toilet and shower over bath in one space). Gras was a bit high and hidden was dog/cat poo :( Please - an anti-slip in the bath, just a tip ... And there's no internet/wifi. OTOH - it does quiet your vacation :) And easy acces to Internet via either Settle or Hawes library (free) Good trips to be made to top of Three Peaks, Lancaster, Hawes, Skipton, Settle (check Tripadvisor for more tips).

This is the third time my group has stayed at Fawber Cottage. There are great walks straight from the door and we like to stoke up the fire in the lounge, making the cottage a cosy place to be. Would we go again? The answer has to be yes.

What a beautiful cottage, we loved it, it was so cosy and warm, lovely little wood burner which was a treat. The garden was very nice, beautiful rockery and lovely little areas where you can sit with a drink and enjoy the scenery. We loved it.

My friends and I decided to rent a cottage together for a girly weekend away, and the first thing that attracted us to Fawber Cottage was the price! Given that between 6 of us, the price didn’t amount to much per person, we weren’t expecting much, but as soon as we walked in, we were pleasantly surprised. Very clean and tidy. The kitchen is very homely and has every amenity required that you would expect from your own kitchen. The living room is very quirky with a mix match of furniture, but very comfortable which was made even more homely with the wood burner (Coal, Wood and firelighters provided) The bedrooms are apt, but the actual beds were quite uncomfortable. There were a few things that could do with sprucing up. There was an incident where the toilet seat fell off (we didn’t laugh much, honest!) and the living room ceiling started to leak at one point when the shower was used! The DVD player is very temperamental and there is no TV signal, so if you’re wanting to settle down for the evening with a few films I’d advise bringing your own DVD player. There are plenty of games and books provided for the rainy days. There is absolutely no mobile phone signal whatsoever! This is a good thing to escape from the world, but you’re left feeling a bit panicky that if something was to happen, there’s no way to raise the alarm (Although, there are neighbours close by) WIFI wouldn’t go amiss, but saying that, the cottage wouldn’t have the same relaxing escapism. The gardens surrounding the cottage are beautiful and along with the scenery it really is a lovely place. It’s only 0.9 miles away from the local village, so within walking distance to remote society. I will say one thing though, if you are to stay at Fawber Cottage, be prepared to engage in an episode of the Crystal Maze to find the keys to the cottage! The instructions given by the landlady are not very forthcoming so you have to do a bit of investigating to find the keys and crack the code, but to be honest, it just added to the fun!

This is the second time my group had stayed at this property, it is excellent value for money. The cottage is cosy once the multi fuel stove is stoked up and the fabric of the building is warmed through. The overall feel of the cottage is good, we like the fact that the kitchen and dining room are one large area. A really good cottage to get away from it all and have a few meaningful discussions. Great walks direct from the property and short drives give even more choice.

In a quiet location with very easy access to open countryside and great walks.

We like to be in the middle of nowhere and that's exactly where this cottage is situated. We loved it! Also the traditional Yorkshire style of the building was very attractive to us. The garden at three sides of the house was beautiful. Every holiday I write a diary and the little writing desk in the living room was an extra bonus for me, I felt like Emily Brönte! From the first moment we arrived, we felt very much at home. We had some beautiful walks in the area, it's stunning, especially in the Dalhamdale.

The cottage was an authentic Dales cottage and felt like home from the moment we opened the door. The location was perfect for the Three Peaks walk. Everyone loved it and were sad to leave after a wonderful weekend.

I travelled to Fawber cottage with a group of friends to enjoy the rural idyllic of the Dales for bank holiday weekend. The cottage is in a lovely location- well off the main road and nestled just under the mountain but within walking distance of a pub and small shop. Unfortunately when we came to pick the keys up, we were given the wrong key code to get into the safe and the wrong location of the safe but having no mobile signal, we could not call to clarify. Luckily, the local pub allowed us to use their phone and Avril (the owner) gave us the correct key code and location of the safe finally (this was not a great end to a 6 hour journey to get there!) Then we got in and the cottage is very sweet with plenty of room for a group of 6. Only one bathroom though so be prepared to cross your legs if travelling in a large group and bring toilet roll as we were only supplied with half of one for a group of 6 for the whole weekend. One of my friends knocked over a small glass of water in the bathroom whilst having a bath and it promptly started leaking into the living room below so be very careful when you use the bathroom. Also, the mattresses on the beds have seen better days (I could feel the springs in mine). Another thing to be aware of is the very small fridge and too few knives. There is another fridge in the adjoining barn but it is not the most convenient when it is bucketing rain outside. We had one cosy evening round the fire but the coal burner is too small for the size of the living room so took quite a few hours to heat up… make sure you start it in well in advance! Also, the neighbour across the way is clearly not a fan of guests staying at the property… we got our ball stuck in the hedge and she was very rude to us when we asked her if she could return it (bearing in mind we were only walking past on our way up the mountain and not playing directly outside her property). She promptly started strimming the very same hedge very early the next morning (a Sunday)- so try not to annoy her! Apart from these things (which are just little really), there are lots of birds in the garden, brilliant location, warm and cosy in the evenings and good company- you are bound to have a good stay here.

Fawber Cottage is just the real deal. It is exactly what you imagine a Dale cottage to be and absolutely authentic in every detail. We were instantly charmed and kept smiling all week. Everything is spotlessly clean, very well organised and unbelievably cosy - it was like staying with the great-aunt you never had - and the beautiful wrap-around garden is a joy. No complaints at all, this is a perfect get-away.

We had a fantastic stay in Fawber Cottage and loved its cosy character, it was just what we wanted. It was lovely and warm when we arrived and very clean and tidy. We enjoyed having a wood burning stove very much and the children loved playing outside. It was a fantastic base for climbing Pen-y-Ghent and exploring the surrounding villages. We will definitely come and stay again.

My group of 5 stayed here for 3 nights in November 20102. The house is OK for 5 but an extra loo would have handy at times. The kitchen and dining area is excellent, comfortable lounge. Bedrooms good with comfortable beds. The only gripe would be parking, there is enough room for 2 cars but being on a track it was extremely muddy and passing gear from person to person so not as to get mud into the cottage was the order of the day. We had 2 good walks, 3 if you count a walk to the pub one evening.

The cottage is in a gorgeous location within easy reach of many of the Dales. It had everything we needed whilst retaining its Dales charm and character. The view in the garden was stunning and heading back home after a busy day out, we always looked forward to our cosy peacefhome from home! The cottage was very homely and well-equipped. Coal was provided for the fire. Excellent location for visiting the Yorkshire Dales.

Fawber Cottage was ideal for a couple and maybe four persons but for six, you would have to be very friendly. The wait for the one bathroom/toilet would test the strongest friendships. The cottage was very warm, comfortable and clean and had everything (or nearly everything) to make life easy. Unfortunately there was little useful local information. The property is in quite an isolated spot so it would have been useful to have details of nearest Doctor, A & E, Dentist, Supermarket, Local Shop etc. We also had to search for the instructions for appliances and never did find those for the washing machine. Most properties have a folder containing all this information which is to be found in a conspicuous place such as on the dining table. Also no “Welcome pack” of say milk and eggs as is usual these days. If you are thinking of using the Settle – Carlisle railway do note that there is excellent free parking at Horton station.

As a German visitor the typical English cottage style and the surroundings next to the Pennine Way and other walking paths. The overall warm and cosy atmosphere.

The cottage was lovely; tastefully decorated and very warm - the stove was perfect and kept the house very toasty. There were six adults in the party and the rooms were big enough to accommodate all without any stepping on toes. The caretaker was lovely and helpful too.

Lovely quiet setting with view of Pen-y-Ghent. Charming period features. Excellent sized kitchen and living room. Storage heaters worked well. Lovely planting in garden.

A very well kept cottage in a lovely quiet location. A 10 minute walk and you are on the Pennine bridleway overlooking Ribblesdale. Whilst it was well equipped with most things, I think the TV needs bringing into the 21st century. It was an old set with 4:3 screen, not at all suitable for the connected Sky Box (which only had the basic channels). An up to date wide screen TV is needed and I'm not sure whether Freeview, which would give you a lot more channels, is receivable in this area. Since there is no Hi-Fi equipment you need to take your own mini hi-fi system (as I did). Radio reception is non-existent with DAB and you need a proper rod aerial for FM reception (if you have a radio with a wire aerial it will simply not work).

The location of the cottage was superb. The birds nesting on the cottage and in the outbuildings and garden were a particular delight.

This is a lovely little cottage tucked away near farm land in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. It was immaculately clean, and everything we needed was provided. The living room was very cosy, and the kitchen table was perfect for gathering around for roast dinners. We vistited over New Year after a period of heavy snowfall, yet the cottage was always warm. We were able to go on walks straight from the cottage door, and met the local potholing club along the way! There is a small village shop approx 25mins walk from the house selling very limited supplies, but a car journey is definitely necessary for more stocking up. Overall a wonderful, quaint little place!

Fawber cottage is a lovely place to stay. The location is great, you can take really good walks straight from the front door. The cottage has lots of character. It isn't a posh/luxurious cottage, it retains its basic rural charm with a wood burning stove. Facilities are all that you could need.

We had a fantastic time in this lovely cottage. Everything we needed was provided, and we found the property remarkably warm and cosy given the snow outside. The decor and furnishings were simple and functional, but the house was spotless and overall it was exactly what we were looking for, as well as being excellent value. There was a close-by pub and small shop for essentials, though we found that we were so content inside that we barely ventured out! An excellent stay all round.

I had been previously so knew what to expect, it's quite traditional and in a lovely location. The bed was really comfortable, bathroom was modern, kitchen was very well-equipped, it was really warm and I love the multi-fuel stove. The location is fantastic, you can walk straight from the door. It was just what I wanted and we all really enjoyed our holiday.

Amazing location and a very cosy, warm cottage.

The position of the cottage is wonderful, the cottage is very picturesque, the facilities int eh kitchen are excellent. The furishing and decorations are slightly faded, and the double bed was old and uncomfortable, One bathroom was fine for 2 of us but woulld have been more difficult to manage with more peole in the hose without a separate WC.

Really beautiful rural setting with fantastic walks from doorstep. Cottage very cosy, multi fuel stove particularly welcoming after day out in the fresh air. Lovely children's play park and tennis courts in village which were accessed via a field of sheep (my kids loved that).

The location of this cottage is perfect! You can walk from the front door out onto the Pennine Way and there are many excellent well marked paths that can be walked from New Houses. The building itself is charming and the coal stove makes it very cosy at night.

We stayed here Easter 2009 and found teh location perfect. We hardly used the car being able to walk dirctly from the house into the hills or to teh railway station to catch trains to get us further afield. House provided everything we required.

This was a lovely little cottage in a very private location. It had a great kitchen (perfect for an evening roast) and a very nice fireplace in the living room. There is a pub down the road and a tea room a little further on. The cottage is in a perfect spot for walking Pen-y-ghent and accessing lots of other walks in the area.

Outside lights were on when we arrived in the dark, it was welcoming after a long journey. Cottage in a nice area. Nice amount of games (board and playstation), books and videos.

We found people most pleasant, and food available there was excellent. Train to Ashley and the weather was beautiful.

We enjoyed the cosiness of the cottage and the privacy - a real get-away-from-it-all holiday. We were able to go walking straight from the door and only a 10 min walk to the Crown pub for a meal. The cottage is also situated well for a number of places we wanted to visit, Dent, Clapham, Ribbleshead viaduct and Settle.

Liked the location and facilities and had a great relaxing holiday.

Although the cottage was in a hamlet it was still a quiet, peaceful location. Plenty of bats, swallows, starlings roosting in bordering hedge, crowing cockerels and sheep. Location was very convenient but just enough off the beaten track.

Cosy cottage but also quite spacious accommodation. In centre of the main Dales peaks and surrounded by beautiful countryside and walks. Lots of lambs.

The scenery was spectacular, all within a 30 mile radius from the cottage. The location of the cottage was quiet, yet it was within a reasonable walking distance from Horton and just 90 minutes by car from York.

This cottage was very welcoming and homely, well-equipped and comfortable. I appreciated the fact that we were left in peace to enjoy it, which we certainly did. I would most definitely recommend it.

The cottage was decorated in a country cottage style and very comfortable. The Pennine way and Pen-y-Gent paths go past the cottage so ideal for some excellent walks.

The cottage is very warm and cosy even in December and there is plenty of space in the downstairs areas. We have yet to let a cottage from Sykes which does not come up to our expectations and fit exactly to the description that Sykes gave.

It was our fifth stay at Fawber, what can I say? Snow on Pen-y-ghent, really quiet and relaxing, the caretaker keeps the place spotless and a fire roaring in the living room. Can't beat it.

We have been to this property before, it was nice that Sykes have now offered short breaks and weekend deals. The owner was discrete as ever.
