Signal Box, Newtonmore

The property, newly built in 2004 in the form of a signal box, is adjacent to the station in the Badenoch & Strathspey village of Newtonmore. To make the most of the panoramic views towards the River Spey and Cairngorm Mountains, the accommodation is upside down, with a spacious, open plan living area on the first floor, while on the ground floor is a double bedroom and bathroom with sauna. Decorated to a high standard, this charming property is in an ideal location to explore the village and take advantage of the walking in the area. The cottage is 150 metres from a link into the Wildcat Trail - a 7km orbital walk and path network. The other attractions of the Cairngorms National Park are also within easy reach - an excellent base at any time of year!

Second stay at the signal box and yet again not disappointed. As it was our Honeymoon we wanted somewhere special and this was at the top of our list. Fantastic place and surroundings. Highly recommended if you fancy treating yourselves.

Rated by Russell T reviewed on 10th October 2021

The Signal Box was a beautifully looked after, warm and welcoming home from home for our exploring of the Scottish Highlands. Incredibly clean, well presented, quirky and equipped for everything! On arrival was a (slightly addictive...) chocolate cake, milk and everything there to get the wood burner going... and the view!!!! My God, the view....... We watched the sun creep over the mountains every day in awe of the scenery. In recommendation we tried the Glen Hotel for food which was okay, but after reading the reviews we expected better food/service and were a bit disappointed. The Braeriach Hotel on the high street on the other hand was a riot!! If you want to be welcomed into the community with open arms and enjoy great company and a few drinks whilst listening to the regulars blast out Sinatra on the karaoke (Friday night) this is the place for you! One of the best nights out for a long time ending in hugs and "come back to see us again." Truly felt welcomed and left with a warm fuzzy glow.... (could also account that to the whisky....) If you want to laugh continuously for a few hours, pay them a visit. The Scottish highlands has so much to see and do and the Signal Box is central to it all. Our first visit and I doubt it will be our last. Thank you Isla for a wonderful stay.”

It must surely have been a labour of love to have made the signalbox into such a perfect holiday home . It is spotlessly clean, warm enough for the chilliest days, and has everything that a visitor could possibly need and then some ! We appreciated the home made cake , flowers and milk to welcome us and also the sauna after our days out . The latter resulted in great hilarity and photos which I will NOT be posting .. By the end of the week we were on waving terms with the guards and passengers on the trains and , of course, the sheep . We've never stayed in a better place than the signalbox at Newtonmore.

We have just had the most wonderful week at the Signal Box! This is one where you really should believe the hype. It's perfectly located, immaculately presented and has everything that you could possibly need including a super-friendly and gracious host in Isla, who furnished us with not only an excellent recommendation for a wonderful local mountain climb but also the secret recipe to her divine chocolate cake! We all had great fun exploring beautiful Newtonmore and found it a great jumping point from which to explore the Cairngorms, Loch Ness, Inverness and Pitlochry. The scenery was spectacular and changed constantly so the TV never went on...and that's no small achievement when you have a 13 year old and 9 year old in tow! I would wholeheartedly recommend the Signal Box to anybody wanting to stay somewhere a bit extra special.

Booked through Sykes Cottages and have reviewed on there but thought I would on here too. If you are thinking of booking The Signal Box then just do it and you won't be disappointed. Great location, lovely property and fantastic views of the Cairngorms. We visited for a week in April and had a good lot of snow which made it just magical. Plenty of places to visit nearby and further afield. Visit the Cairngorm mountain, Aviemore and if you are up for a drive head over to Isle of Skye! Well worth it. Thanks to the owners for providing such a lovely place to stay and the freshly baked chocolate cake when we arrived was a lovely surprise!!

The appeal of the Signal Box for us was our connection to the railway, having both worked with railway companies in the past. The photographs and reviews of the Signal Box beforehand were all very encouraging, and the booking process, arranging key collection with Mrs Russell and arriving/departing was all very flexible and easy. On arrival, the Signal Box looks stunning from the outside, and once inside, it is filled with every conceivable home comfort you could need, including being greeted by a delicious home made chocolate cake and fresh flowers and a thoughtful pint of milk from the owner, with lovely fresh decor and loads of space to relax throughout. We didn't use the television once as the views across to the surrounding hillls (snowcapped!), golfers in the distance, the arrivals and departures from the passing trains and the new born lambs in the field across the road provided plenty of entertainment and just made it the perfect time of year to be there and to enjoy nature. Sitting in the comfortable armchairs, on the couch or at the dining table all gave different views through the many windows around the top floor - whoever designed the Signal Box was inspired! The kitchen is fully equipped with every possible utensil and cooking equipment if you like self-catering, or a 10 min stroll to the start of Newtonmore main street gives options for dining out - would highly recommend the Glen Hotel at the start of the main street, excellent food and great service, and huge portions, and lots of craft ales and whiskies on offer. The sleeping and bathroom facilities are excellent, comfy bed, lots of storage space, great water pressure for the shower and the bathroom under-floor heating was a treat!! Lots of books and games on offer for visitors, and particularly loved the collection of railway and train books which obviously belonged to an enthusiast, and photographs of old Newtonmore station on the walls. Would recommend trying the Wildcat trail walk, about 7 miles and leaves from just beside the station, a circular walk taking you through different landscapes, along beside the River Spey and upwards for stunning views, farm fields, forest and waterfalls, as well as several other walks around the area of varying degrees of ease/difficulty depending on your fitness level and length of stay. The Signal Box is in a lovely quiet area beside the station, we slept like logs on both of our nights here! On our last morning the sun was shining and it was warm enough to sit outside the Box upstairs on the bench and enjoy the heat of the sun for a little while, before we sadly had to head for home. The time here was so relaxing and comfortable (especially when the log burning stove was on!), it felt like we had been there a lot longer than two nights. We both agreed that we can't wait to come back again, thank you Mrs Russell and family for a fantastic stay in amazing place :-)

Walking upstairs from the downstairs bedroom is a daily delight. Arriving in the huge kitchen / dining / living space one is constantly amazed by the views across Strathspey ... for miles and miles both up and down the valley. The handy binoculars allow for great close-ups of brown hate in the field directly opposite. The accommodation is very well planned and maintained. It's comfortable and cosy. So glad we managed to get a cancellation and get here. Will be returning.

The Signal Box - where to start! It' s a beautifully appointed holiday home - just right for a couple. Cosy and comfortable - perfect to come home to on a cold day. The cottage owner Isla has prepared it as though it was her own home - full of lovely little touches that just make your stay special. From the well stocked kitchen ( every implement you could want) to the bathroom with fluffy towels and scented hand wash ( and underfloor heating) - she has considered everything. The cottage is well situated for keen walkers. Don't miss the the Wildcat walk and take advantage of all the hills nearby. Well situated for Pitlochry, Aviemore, Inverness. Thanks Isla - who else would spoil you with flowers and a chocolate cake on arrival.

Rated by Mr Walton reviewed on 6th July 2015

Isla provided a thoughtful welcome by leaving out chocolate cake and milk for our arrival. The signal box is easily found and is a great base to explore the surrounding area. Although the trains are quite frequent, they're not a distraction and the lovely views from the cottage of the sheep, lambs, bunnies and Cairngorm mountain range are great to come back to after days out. The cottage was really homely and my other half loved using the wood burning stove in the evenings. Everything is provided. Would definitely stay here again if we revisit the area.

The Signal Box was stunning! Not just the internal décor, but the scenery from the windows was breathtaking, with the added extra of the trains. The owner of the property was not intrusive at all, but we knew how to get hold of her if needed. The property is located pretty centrally for all areas, such as Pitlochry, Aviemore, Perth, Inverness etc. Excellent on all levels.

The house really feels like home. Inside the house is of good quality and you can notice that on everything; the good shower, nice thick towels, good bed and chairs in front of the fireplace. Even the wood for the fire is all chopped waiting for you. The house is very light and spacious and the view is just amazing, we kept looking outside. All in all a wonderful experience!

This property is superb, purpose built as a holiday let using wood which has been sourced locally and is very comfortable. It has everything you could possibly want including excellent views and the pleasure of passing trains which are not at all intrusive, even the very occasional one passing during the night which all adds to the ambience. The location is very convenient for touring with good access to the A9 and even the West Coast at Fort William is only an hour away If you do not want to use a car you can get a train to Inverness or Perth virtually from the front door. Book it quickly because it is,rightly, very popular and one of the very best self catering lets in Scotland.

The property is light, spacious and in very good condition with excellent views. The location with respect to being adjacent to the railway with a signalman's view of the trains enhanced the experience and made this holiday one of the most memorable that I have had. The Caretaker was as wonderful as her cake.

This is a wonderful holiday home and I would recommend it to anyone. Beautiful surroundings and beautiful furnishings. It was very comfortable, immaculately clean, and everything you might need for a super holiday. We watched the trains go by and waved to everyone, and they did not disturb us at all. We will certainly go again.

We spent a week in this purpose built property which looks like a signal box. Trains run approximately hourly through the day - we did not find them intrusive. There are commercial properties adjacent, presumably in the former goods yard, but the views are across fields to the hills beyond. Heaven. Ideal for walking and wildlife watching. We hope to return.

The Signalbox is clean, spacious and set in beautiful countryside. We never tired of looking out the windows at The Cairngorms. Our 18 month old son loved the trains that stopped or passed through the station and was in his element exploring the cottage. There is plenty to explore on your doorstep with the Highland Folk Museum about 25-30 minutes walk away and aviemore a short drive of 10-15 minutes. Further afield, we visited Inverness, Ben Nevis, the Wildlife Park at Kingussie and the nearby Inshriach Nursery that makes amazing cakes. Wonderful, hope to pop back sooner rather than later!

Having the train literally on our doorstep really made this holiday. The Signalbox is on the platform of Newtonmore station. We arrived by train and left for home on the Caledonian Sleeper. We used the train to visit Inverness and Aviemore, for skiing at Cairngorm and walking in the Glenmore Forest. The cottage, with the living room and kitchen upstairs gave us lovely views towards the Cairngorms. It also made us into noseyparkers: we couldn't resist looking to see who got on and off the trains that stopped at the station! The cottage was very well appointed even having a sauna cubicle downstairs. We loved the log burner and the limitless supply of wood to keep it going. There was a marked walking trail around Newtonmore, about 6 miles, that is well worth doing. The village has a decent Co-op and the local garage has a shop too. There are a couple of pubs in the village and at least one hotel open to non-residents. One disappointment was that the restaurant recommended by many in the Visitors Book was closed for the two weeks at the end of January as was the most interesting looking shop in the village.

Took the train to Avimore and spent the day walking at the Cairngorm Mountain centre. Short distance to the local shops. A lovely place to spend a relaxing week, with the bonus of wonderful scenery.

Located on the platform of the mainline to Inverness made this an excellent cottage for a holiday using only rail for transport. The overnight sleeper to Euston stops at your door!

We had a wonderful snowy Christmas at the Signal Box. The Christmas Tree and Christmas chocolate cake was very welcoming and despite the cold weather, we found the Signal Box was always toasty and warm. The view was amazing.

Rated by Miss Fishpool reviewed on 6th January 2010

The house was well furnished with everything and more you could need. We used the sauna after enjoying long walks, this was a great benefit as it was during heavy snow and as you could imagine, quite cold. The Calendonian sleeper train also passed on a regular basis but it didn't disturb our peace and quiet but qas really lovely to see. The small town of Newtonmore served us well, we were within a short walking distance of local shops and pubs and we also took the train in preferance to the car - as it couldn't have been more convenient to use, being right on the doorstep. We would recommend the area and the property for a lovely holiday. The kind owner of the property also left a tasty chocolate cake for us, which was a sweet (no pun intended!) touch.

This was our second visit and we've already booked a third visit as I write. This is a very comfortable base with excellent facilities which meet the demands of two adults and a teenage daughter! We find it very relaxing - comfy seats and woodburner plus excellant views. We have all made use of the sauna. There are good restaurants in the vicinity and we have also taken the train to Aviemore and also upto Inverness.

This was the perfect place to stay, a signal box by the railway. Fantastic views, watching the Rabbits and other wildlife. A good place to have a base to see other parts of Scotland. The accomadation was first class , the kitchen was a good size with all the tools you could ask for (except a thermomix tm31). We had a superb Week the weather was stunning. I can thoroughly recommend the wild Cat Trail (take a couple bottle of beers and remember the bottle opener) a very pleasent walk on a very sunny day. Please visit the museums well worth the effort. if you want to Stay in scotland this is the place

This is a delightful property - very well equipped and wonderfully warm. A gorgeous chocolate cake, flowers and fresh milk on arrival and the scenery from the windows of the Cairngorm Mountains is breath taking. The Signal Box was a very relaxing place.

Rated by Mrs Taylor reviewed on 15th December 2009

We arrived by train (if travelling long distance BOOK A SEAT!). We had a warm welcome with a welcome pack including milk in the fridge for tea! The house was immaculate and bright with brilliant views. Our children loved the spaciousness and the trains that passed. The surrounding walks were just right and the added plus of the sauna warmed us up after our long walks in the snow. There was a small shop within walking distance that had all the basics as well as movie rentals. We don't often go to the same place twice, but this one is tempting!

A warm and comfortable place to rest after a day on the hills. Good views from the windows of the ever changing colours of the Gairngorms and surrounding hills. A nice welcome package and a friendly greeting from the owner on our arrival. The wood burning stove was excellent on the few cold nights that we did have.

The location and the comfortable accommodation. This was a return visit and our expectations were fully met. The accommodation suits well for couple and a teenage daughter. Its location was perfect for getting to beautiful locations for hill walking and general sightseeing. Being close to the railway station meant that you could utilise the train service in the area which was ideal. The weather was as we hoped, cold and snowing which made it even more magical.
