Location Details

With a charter granted in 1262, the traditional Cumbrian market town of Wigton still holds a market each Tuesday in the covered market hall. This lovely town is a popular centre for shopping, pubs and restaurants, as well as for other activities such as theatre, bowls, swimming, tennis and other sports. The Lord Melvyn Bragg novel, 'A Time to Dance', featured the town of Thurston, which was based on Wigton and the local area. The town is just 18 miles from Penrith and so makes an excellent base from which to explore the cathedral city of Carlisle, the North Lakes and the natural beauty of the West Cumbrian Coast. The epic Roman construction, Hadrian's Wall, is within 25 miles, whilst the Scottish borders and their famous town of Gretna Green are within easy driving distance.

Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.

Reviews

Fell Cottage was really brilliant, it has everything you need and is spacious but also cosy. Janet & John couldn't be nicer and it has to be the most dog-friendly place we've ever stayed in. Fresh eggs from the chickens, apples from the trees and amazingly very little rain. The location is lovely and the views stunning. Would highly recommend using it any time of the year

The cottage was superb in every respect and the attention to detail was second to none. In addition to the cottage, the beautiful garden was a lovely additional treat.

We had a warm welcome from the owners. We were very impressed by the property, gardens and the wonderful view. It is an extremely well equipped property including many games, toys and puzzles for the kids. The kitchen is well stocked and there was a useful utility room too.

A beautiful, spacious and well equipped cottage with stunning views. In a quiet part of Cumbria, but if you want to visit the tourist hotspots they are only a short drive away. We visited in February and the cottage was well heated with central heating and a wood burning stove. The owners made us feel very welcome.

Fell Cottage is a lovely cosy, well equipped, cottage - and more spacious than it appeared on the web site's photos too - in an attractive location with great views, with friendly, helpful owner. Near perfect.

Fell Cottage was really comfortable, with everything you could possibly need.

The hosts were most welcoming and friendly. The photographs did not do the property justice - it is stunning and quirky. The dog friendliness was most appreciated. There were outstanding views and easy access to major towns for supplies.

Fell Cottage was the best equipped and decorated Cottage we have used. Views were spectacular and the Cottage was very clean and comfortable. Our owners were very helpful and on hand if we needed anything. We will definitely go to Fell Cottage again.

This well presented cottage was a sheer delight for our holiday. It more than met our expectations, which is a tribute to our hosts. We were pleased with all the rooms and the amenities, we lacked for nothing. The views of Skiddaw and the Solway Firth were totally amazing especially the sunsets. Our two Border Collies had a ball.

Loved the position, had complete peace and quiet. Could not fault the cottage at all, and the garden and views were superb. The owners were wonderful hosts and were very welcoming.

Have returned from a wonderful week in the North Lakes staying at Fell Cottage. I travelled with my partner, two friends (all in our late 20s) and our dog and what a perfect cottage it was to choose! To begin, the owners were very hospitable - greeting us (with their 3 dogs) and showing us around the cottage. They gave us fresh eggs from their hens each day and were only next door if we needed any advice on where to go. Each room had character and the main living room upstairs with open fire was perfect after long days walking in the Lakes. Kitchen was fully stocked with all you could need as was every room in the house. We were very fortunate to have 6 full days of wall to wall sunshine (the owner joking we had brought it with us from the South) and this made for an excellent BBQ in the garden overlooking the north Lakes in the evening. The garden is excellent and anyone staying in Spring/Summer or Autumn will really enjoy it. For us, the area was perfect and we got the best of both worlds. That being becuase it is remote enough and out of the touristy areas to have peace and quiet and local pub food. However, also close enough for 20 mins (Skiddaw) or 1hr 15 (Scarfell) for us to get easy access to walks. I thoroughly recommend this to everyone and can't wait for ou next visit.

The cottage was excellent, every little detail was catered for. Everything was to a very high standard making this a very comfy and relaxing retreat. Would not hesitate to recommend to friends and family.

A wonderful holiday - the cottage, the views, everything was absolutely excellent. Myself and my husband would have no hesitation in booking this cottage again. A home from home, you couldn't and wouldn't need any more from a holiday cottage and the location.

The position of the cottage is beautiful, surrounded by countryside, with extended vistas all around. The owners who live next door were extremely welcoming, inviting us to their bonfire/firework party on the day we arrived (and fed us too!). The cottage itself is warm, welcoming, beautifully decorated and extremely well equipped. It really made a huge difference to the whole break, knowing that even after a blustery and rainy day out, we could return to such a lovely warm and comfortable cottage.

Fell Cottage was immaculate and perfectly suited our needs. 11 out of 10!!!

Fantastic cottage in ideal location. We were made to feel very welcome by the owners who lived adjacent to the Cottage. We took our two Labrador Retrievers as this was a dog friendly cottage and were impressed by the upkeep and standards of the cottage recognising we were probably not the first to take our dogs there. We would not hesitate to return again or recommend to our friends and family.

A very peaceful location away from the normal hustle & bustle of The Lakes. Lovely views on a clear day. Very considerate & friendly owner.

Fell Cottage is a 5 star cottage, it is everything and more, but Jan,Jon & Charlotte the hosts make it a wonderful stay into a 7 star Cottage. We found this cottage three years ago and have since stayed 8 times, and now looking forward to a re-visit in December. We are so pleased to have found Fell Cottage, for us the BEST Cottage stay in the Lakes, and we have stayed at many over the years.

Beautiful cottage, perfectly appointed. Lots of little finishing touches that made it feel like a home from home. Clearly loved, this cottage is charming from top to bottom. Nestled on the edge of The Lakes, there are many places to visit within a reasonable driving distance.

The scenery was stunning and it is a very dog friendly area.

We stayed at Fell Cottage in Dec 2013. From the warm and friendly welcome when we arrived (from the owners who live next door) to the excellent cottage facilities, fantastic views and wonderful Christmas decorations, we absolutely loved this cottage, and wanted to take it home with us! Situated on the Northern Edge of the edge of the Lake District, so not the most central position, but the cottage is beautifully appointed, to the tiniest detail, and has wonderful views which I'm sure would be amazing from the BBQ area on a summer's evening. We were only a couple with 2 dogs (also made very welcome) but the cottage was very spacious and would happily accomodate a family, with dogs. We would highly recommend to anyone, and would like to thank the owners for their hospitality and a wonderful stay!

Wonderful cottage. A quiet location. The owners made us feel welcome, at ease and relaxed, and made our holiday enjoyable. Would recommend this cottage to any of my friends.

Rated by Mr Lambeth reviewed on 26th October 2013

Out of the many cottages that advertise that they are 'dog friendly', then this was one of the few that truly was dog friendly. Delightful cottage and they allowed us to leave our two dogs on occasions when we wanted to go out without them. The cottage had everything and the owners next door were so helpful. Will definitely (Lord Willing) book the cottage again. The kind of place to keep going back to. Loads of games too. Lovely holiday.
