Reviews

Warm and cosy cottage very clean and well equipped with very secure nice rear garden for our dog. Lovely views from main bedroom with a really comfortable double bed. The wood burning fire in the evening was great and very relaxing. We highly recommend Hillside cottage and hope to come back next year. Terry and Brenda.

This cottage is beautifully decorated and amongst the best equipped we've ever stayed in. We were here over New Years with the kids and the dog and found it comfortable and cosy, with a stunning inglenook fireplace (and the New Year's bubbles that were gifted to us went down very well!). The location is ideal for exploring the Somerset coast and the Quantock Hills. I wouldn't hesitate to book again.

Lovely well equipped cottage inside with the added benefit of off-road parking and rear garden outside. Excellent base to return to after days out in the Quantock Hills, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, Dunster and coastal walks from East Quantoxhead to St Audries bay (you can go further if you don't hit high tide) and Kilve beach. Highly recommend taking your dog for a roam around the Quantocks.

We had a lovely week staying at Hillside Cottage;it was perfect for us and our 2 dogs. The cottage is immaculate and extremely comfy as well as being in the perfect location for The Quantocks. The village is ideal with a brilliant shop and a nice pub. Thank you Hillside for a great holiday.

Hillside cottage offers lovely, comfortable accommodation in a lovely Somerset village. There are a variety of walks from the front door. Further afield are several National Trust properties and RSPB reserves well worth visiting. Despite current Coronavirus limitations we were able to enjoy lunch most days at nearby pubs and cafes. The cottage owners and caretakers have paid great attention to providing everything needed for a comfortable and safe holiday.

Lovely, quaint property with lots of character, meticulously maintained, ideal for young family and a pet. In hot weather property was also nice and cool. Secure garden a massive plus for dog and also storing bikes. Everything that you needed was provided in the kitchen and bathroom and WiFI was excellent. Location was remote and quiet which was what we wanted but plenty of day trips within 45 minutes drive and nice local store and play area for children. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We were highly delighted with our stay in Hillside Cottage. The cottage was very well equipped, comfortable, very clean and everything is finished to a high standard. The log burner makes it warm and cosy in the evening. The beautiful garden is very dog friendly, our girls loved it. very quiet too. Lots of information on the surrounding area. We visited Weston Super Mare, Burnham on sea and the lovely beach at Kilve. The harbour at Watchet is well worth a visit too. Overall a perfect holiday.

Perfect cottage near the edge of the Quantocks, peaceful well equipped, good beds for a great night’s sleep and a lovely enclosed garden, safe for our little dog. Great for walking, close to Dunster, Minehead, Blue Anchor and Watchet. Community shop in village and good pub close by. Visit Blackmoor Farm Café at Cannington for the best cream tea. This holiday exceeded our expectations.

A lovely 'lived in' feel to this comfortable, well equipped cottage. Lovely walks around the village for us and the dog if you did not want to go out in the car. Well stocked village shop for essentials and supermarkets within 6 miles. The lanes around are narrow, however we got used to them quickly and did not meet with any problems. Woodburner was a bonus especially at the time of year. Would visit again, probably in the summer to make the most of the lovely enclosed and peaceful garden.

My husband and I had a very enjoyable and memorable week at Hillside Cottage at the end of November. The cottage is ideally placed for rambles in the picturesque scenery of the Quantock hills: don't miss the view from Cothelstone Hill on a fine day. We also enjoyed the well-presented Steart nature reserve where we saw starling murmurations. The nearest beach is just a few miles away at Kilve- a rocky beach where it is not uncommon to find ammonites. There are many excellent farm cafes and historic pubs to eat out in the pretty local villages. Spaxton itself is a friendly village with a community-run shop and the Lamb Inn which offers great home-made pies. We were very comfortable in Hillside Cottage which is cosy, clean and exceptionally well-equipped. We loved our evenings by the woodburner in the huge, old fireplace. The owners provide plentiful local information and the managers are available if needed. We considered our holiday to be excellent value for money. Do travel prepared for Somerset's lovely but narrow and winding lanes.

We, Dutch guys, had a wonderful two weeks with our two dogs at Hillside Cottage. Nice garden, where the dogs could run free and beautiful surroundings for dog walks etcetera. We went from Calais to Folkestone by train through the Eurotunnel and that was so easy and relaxed. It only takes you about half an hour. I can recommend it to my fellow countrymen. England is a very dogfriendly country and therefore nice to visit if you’re looking for a ‘dog holiday destination’. When you visit the website of the Eurotunnel, you’ll find all the information you need to know about how to travel to the UK with your 4-legged frien(s). Have a nice holiday!

We found the cottage very comfortable and well equipped. With a private garden and seating for that outdoor dining experience. Set in the small village of Spaxton on the edge of the Quantock Hills. Within easy reach of a number of places of interest and the Somerset coast.

Hillside Cottage is a very well maintained, well equipped cottage in the peaceful village of Spaxton and we thoroughly enjoyed our weekend there. We enjoyed the pretty rear garden and can imagine that, in the winter months, the cottage will be welcoming, cosy and warm. The village has a lovely pub and an excellent community shop - both within a ten to fifteen minute walk of the cottage. We would have no hesitation in recommending Hillside Cottage and would stay there again.

We used the cottage as a base to visit family, see the wonderful Haynes Car Museum, Yeovil Fleet Air Arm Museum, Glastonbury and Cheddar Gorge. We also visited the beach to see the fossils, and enjoyed the steam railway from Bishops Lydyard to Minehead and Dunster Castle. A week was nowhere near enough time to see it all. The local people were so polite and friendly, and the cottage itself had more thoughtful touches than you can imagine. Excellent value, well done Sandi and Colin, and thanks for welcoming us to your cottage.

Hillside Cottage nestles in the village of Spaxton Somerset. The accommodation is well equipped with a secluded garden and within easy walking distance of a village store where local people make you really welcome. Plenty of good safe local walks and easy access by car to the main resorts and activities. The owners are to be congratulated on the care they have taken in making this cottage a true home from home.

Rated by RevLesG reviewed on 9th September 2017

The cottage is on a windy road in a quiet place but you are only 10 to 15 minutes from Bridgwater by car which has supermarkets and takeaways. For a bigger resort there is Minehead less than an hour away and there are dog friendly beaches in between. The cottage itself is cosy, comfortable and exceptionally clean and well equipped. It felt like a home from home. Whether you are sitting around the kitchen table or lounging on the sofa, it is perfect. The nearest pub is a mile walk and that is a lovely place too. There are lots of places to walk the dogs but you do have to get in your car to start with in the main, if you want to let them off lead. There is a lovely mile loop just round the corner that you can do on lead first thing in the morning. We ran a very hilly 5 mile course as well, which was great. Congratulations to the owners and Gary who looks after the place. Cannot wait to find an opportunity to go back. The information we received before we went was excellent too.

A lovely little cottage in a quiet little village off the beaten track. Handy for the Quantock Hills and Bridgwater and beyond, or just sitting in the garden relaxing. Some lovely little touches from the owners to greet us; tea-bags, sweets and biscuits laid on! All the amenities you would expect, plus some you wouldn't, all in excellent, clean, condition. Certainly hope to go back in the future.

Rated by Amanda Y reviewed on 21st May 2017

Lots of nice walks and viewsinthe Quantocks. We had a lovely dog walk from pretty Quantoxhead down to the coastal path. We wandered along the sea line, not for the faint hearted, towards Chantry. Look for the quaint tea gardens. Here you can enjoy lovely traditional food. I had tomato and sweet potato soup with lovely bread, absolutely scrumptious, best ever. My better half tucked into a cream tea. Finished the round walk with a stroll back to the car along a footpath through open fields. Dunster castle , Weston S. Mare and Sands bay were enjoyed. An enjoyable visit to Taunton was topped with our lunch. Try and find "Loafers" near the centre. They are tucked away near the end of a small shopping arcade. They do a wonderful selection of lovely take away food. The choices available are vast. The biggest problem is choosing, and it is healthy and tasty. lovely staff also. Back to Spaxton. Lots of lanes. The cottage is best approached from Bridgewater from West st, just past Morrisons on the Broadway.

We loved the cottage and had a wonderful time in Somerset. The information folder provided gave us some great tips to make the most of our break. The cottage itself was wonderful; spotlessly clean, extremely comfortable and very homely and cosy. We also found the WiFi extremely useful. We have already recommended it to friends and look forward to re-booking ourselves soon.

Rated by Mr Cameron reviewed on 23rd April 2016

We arrived fairly late after a long-ish journey to find a lovely cottage - a welcome pack, which included tea, coffee, milk, biscuits & chocolates, had been left for us and was very welcome indeed. A designated parking space has fairly recently (I believe) been created in the front garden - this is very useful as the terrace of houses, of which Hillside Cottage is a part, got quite busy and it would have been difficult to park on the narrow road otherwise. There is also the facility to charge an electric car if you have one! The cottage is very comfortable and nicely decorated. There's also a washing machine and dishwasher; the fridge is on the small side but it was ok for us. The wood burning stove was lovely - the first basket of logs & kindling being free with a charge for additional logs used which is fair enough. The bedrooms are a nice size and the beds comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipped. Mobile reception isn't great - there are a couple of spots in the cottage where you can get a signal but this is mentioned in the cottage guide. The Wi-Fi is very useful. Spaxton is a lovely quiet village and, as it has no street lights, is good if you want to check out the night sky. The village has a community shop and there are plenty of supermarkets in Bridgewater, about 6 miles away. Hillside Cottage is very well placed for exploring Exmoor & the coast and I would definitely recommend it.

We stayed in the Hillside Cottage in Spaxton in May for a week. We found the cottage clean, well looked after an very welcoming. The location was easy to find and isn't too far away from a few smaller towns with supermarkets, but is far enough in the countryside that it is very quiet. Well found the cottage well equipped for a family holiday (for us two adults and a 4 year old). The cottage has a modern feel with the perfect mix of old cottage environment. There is a wide variety of cooking utensils - although I'd suggest bringing a few knives, forks, spoons as those at the cottage are plastic. There are a lot of sharp knives and other cooking utensils otherwise. The only other thing worth noting to is to do some food shopping every couple of days - the fridge was ideal for us for fresh food for about two days, there is a freezer but it is a small freezer box in the fridge (ideal for us as we just needed a way to freeze our ice packs for our lunch bag). The beds were comfy and we slept well. The garden is a good size and although we didn't bring a dog I can see why people with a dog feel it's an ideal place for them. The washing machine was very useful - prevents loads of washing when we get home! LOVED the fire! There was a lot of information provided about walking routes and local attractions. Very very ideal for walkers. For us it was a little out of the way - about an hour to most kid friendly attractions, but there was a lot of variety on offer in the location. Also notable thing about the cottage is it is surrounded front & back with rapeseed fields and if you have hayfever or allergies make sure you bring some tablets. The views are spectacular though! Also wifi is located in cottage (or not shared off near location) - all info supplied in the house welcome book. Phone reception in and out in areas of the house. Overall we've been really impressed and have had a wonderful time. I'd highly recommend it as it's been so so lovely. I'd definitely come back again, excellent value for money

Really appreciated the safety gate and high chair for our young son, and the helpfulness of the man who called me with the key code and provided lots of useful information. The owners had also provided tonnes of information about the practicalities of the cottage and of local attractions, which again made planning our days very stress-free.
