The small crofting township of Nedd (An Nead - Gaelic for nest) is situated on the north coast of the parish of Assynt. Ancient native woods surround Nedd, which overlooks Loch Nedd, a sea loch that's home to a wide variety of sea birds, seals and otters which appear occasionally. The famous colony of puffins at Handa Island is nearby. Nedd is an excellent base for hill walkers and climbers who are keen to explore Quinag, Suilven, Canisp, Benn Stack, Arkle, Ben More Assynt, and Foinaven. Trout and salmon fishing and stalking is available by arrangement on the many hill lochs for fishing enthusiasts. The Stoer Lighthouse, the renowned garden of Kerrachar, the caves of Assynt and the incredible geological feature of 'Moine Thrust', are all within easy reach of the holiday destination of Nedd.

From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

Reviews

The property is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and is a comfortable retreat in beautiful Sutherland.

Rated by Mrs Boyd reviewed on 10th May 2015

Recroy was absolutely spotless upon arrival. It was very well equipped with the only neighbours being the passing sheep. I especially liked the relative isolation of this part of Scotland, which is exactly what I wanted, a get away from it all type of holiday.

Rated by Mrs Reddy reviewed on 21st April 2015

My husband, sister and myself all senior citizens stayed at Recroy for one week from 13th September and found it disgusting. There was no running hot water apart from the shower and a note left on the table said that we should light the fire for hot water. The weather was beautiful and it was much too hot for a fire. However we had to light it but there was no bucket or shovel for the ashes and after two days we couldn't get the logs to burn because of all the ash build up so we had to carry hot water in saucepans from the shower or use the kettle. The dishwasher was broken the baskets were off the runners and could not be fixed so the door wouldn't close. No washing up bowl so had to use the sink which was disgusting and stained badly. There were cobwebs on the ceilings. There wasn't one shelf in the fridge and as we had stopped for shopping it all had to be piled on top of the salad box including bottles of wine. The shower room was disgusting and the tiles and round the edges were full of mildew. The floors were badly badly stained. Some of the windows were so dirty we couldn't see out of them. No cupboards to store food in it all had to be left on top of the work surface. I had driven 80 miles to reach Recroy, arriving in the evening after our late flight from Bristol to Inverness airport and if I hadn't been so tired we would never have stayed there. Couldn't get a signal on our mobile phones so was unable to phone the owner/caretaker to complain. The whole place need a thorough clean and was in a bad state of disrepair. If you like home comforts then stay away from Recroy.

Expected a basic cottage (judged by site photos) but it was neglected & unclean. No racks in fridge, problems with using dishwasher & T. V, which we had to solve for ourselves, mould in walk in shower, on draining board & around taps, table tennis table was propped up underneath with a garden chair & condensation on windows spoiled the view .

The holiday was very relaxing with beautiful views from the property. The scenery in the area is outstanding.

Rated by Mrs Mitchell reviewed on 17th August 2014

Recroy has big windows overlooking stunning views from every room. Lots of space inside the property and lots of things to do if the weather isn't great - our boys loved the table tennis! The surrounding area is beautiful.

A truly wonderful place to unwind and relax. Amazing scenery and quiet, clean sandy beaches, wonderful walks. Can't wait to go back.

Rated by Mr Steenson reviewed on 13th July 2014

The cottage felt very much like a home rather than a holiday let; it was comfortable and eclectic, very light and easy to keep tidy. It was well stocked with some groceries, soaps, and cleaning products etc. It is situated in a beautiful area, with lovely views from all windows. It was so peaceful and quiet and the sunsets were spectacular.

Rated by Mrs Gaskell reviewed on 8th June 2014

A lovely peaceful place to get away for rest and relaxation. The house is well equiped and spacious. Our dog loved the place. Plenty of wildlife and even had the deer at the fence one evening. Great beach just along the road.

Great holiday. Great location for exploring Sutherland and accessing big hills and good walking. Homely house. Dining room and sitting rooms very comfortable. Great view from dining room window.

Rated by Mrs Henderson reviewed on 6th October 2013

This is a well equipped and truly remote cottage, giving you an excellent place for getting away from the rat race. Great views, both of the sea and the mountains. Wildlife literally on your doorstep. The Red Deer were fabulous.

We all needed a get away after difficult year, solitude was bliss the place was gorgeous views very angle to die for!!! Remote...an understatement not for the shoppers!!!

The house was warm and very peaceful.

Rated by Mrs Kruse reviewed on 2nd November 2012

We arrived in the dark so the sight of Deer and badgers in our headlights was a wonderful sign. The cottage is very secluded, has marvellous views and is very cosy. For the birders amongst you, the variety of birds viewed from the cottage was wonderful including Redpoll, Siskins and Buzzards. The garden was perfect for a lively two year old and the whole area was wonderful for his grandparents. You have to like the wide open spaces to like Recroy but we do and for us it was perfection!

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 1st November 2012

The location of the cottage is perfect for a get away from it all holiday. It was very comfortable, which is very important in an area where the weather is so unpredictable!

Rated by Mrs Smiles reviewed on 16th October 2012

We've stayed several times, we know what to expect, comfortable and relaxing. Everything was noticeably cleaner and fresher than last year. Electric blankets a welcome addition! The views as good as ever.

Rated by Ms Chumbley reviewed on 28th September 2012

The cottage is in an excellent position with beautiful views across the valley and hillside. The cottage has great character and lots of space and has a lovely garden. We really liked the indoor play area with a ping- pong table. Good place to tour from. Great wildlife.

Recroy was so welcoming, we felt at home very quickly. Decor including the pictures around the place were extremely pleasing. The geographical area is utterly outstanding.

Very quiet and away from it all, lovely views.

Rated by Mrs Reeve reviewed on 3rd June 2012

Clean and tidy, all facilities that one would require. Spacious yet cosy.Location is ideal for exploration of the North West of Scotland. The amenities were close by (1 Mile)and you could purchase all you needed to remain at Recroy without having to go off to the bigger towns. Liked very much the family time together with no TV to disturb us. Need to inform potential residents that the shop closes on a Saturday at 4pm.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 8th December 2011

Recroy is the perfect place to go if you truly want to get away from it all. Located on a remote (read isolated) coastal road, it is very secluded but good for a relaxing week. Although it was just myself and my husband, Recroy does have good facilities for a family - several different living spaces, two bathrooms and a good selection of books and games. There is a tv and dvd player, although there were no dvds to watch in the property and no tv reception. It worked out well though because we luckily had brought quite a few dvd's with us which we made use of on the rainy days! A fairly new sound system has a handy ipod dock too. As it is quite isolated (it takes at least 30 minutes to get to from the main road), be prepared and take supplies with you. There is a village shop about 2 miles away, but isn't open on a Sunday, and only opens 9-5. Best to stock up in Lochinver or Ullapool before travelling to the property, especially if arriving late on the Saturday. But plenty of beautiful scenery and interesting places to visit/walk to if the weather holds up. Our only criticism is that the property is a bit neglected and could do wth a bit of a facelift - peeling paintwork, threadbare cushions etc. And could do with a really good clean. Dog hairs and stains on the chaise in the dining room, stains on the cork floor, cobwebs in corners, floors that didn't seem to have been vacuumed after the previous guests... With a little bit of attention, it could be a fantastic place to stay.

The property was spacious and comfortable and the position overlooking the sea loch was wonderful.

Rated by Mrs Davies reviewed on 28th September 2011

Size of the property was amazing, as was the selection of games, video and book library. Dishwasher was lovely too and some pleasant touches such as ornaments etc were very much appreciated.

Rated by Mr Case reviewed on 28th August 2011

The largest, best-equipped and most stylish cottage we had on our trip to North West Scotland. It was really remote with beautiful views, a lot to explore and so quiet.

Rated by Mr Ulmer reviewed on 23rd August 2011

Spacious accommodation in a splendid setting. House used regularly by the owners, so they know what is needed for a comfortable stay. This was our third visit.

Rated by Mr Hatherall reviewed on 21st June 2011

Lovely weekend in a very pleasant bungalow with spectular view of the loch from the dining area. Good facilities and amenities. Bit more secluded than we had anticipted.

Wonderful location of cottage, particularly its remoteness and views from all the windows.

Rated by Roberts reviewed on 3rd May 2011

Very peaceful location and we were able to let the dog out in the garden where he was safe. We loved being able to light the wood burner and the views were beautiful over the loch.

Rated by Mrs Anderson reviewed on 30th March 2011

This was the second time that we have been to Recroy. We want to climb more mountains in the area and as long as it is available, we will always use Recroy as it is every thing you could want from a holiday cottage.

Rated by Mr Kerr reviewed on 21st March 2011

We had an absolutely wonderful time at Recroy. We set off every day from the cottage, either by foot, car or on bikes. No matter what direction you head, the scenery is outstanding. A short drive by car and you can be on some of the most beautiful beaches, white sands and a deep blue sea, even though we were blessed with good weather we had the beaches to ourselves. The cottage was wonderful, very spacious and had everything we needed. (Two bathrooms was brilliant especially with two teenagers). All of a very high quality and with the availability of a washer, dryer and dishwasher making life easier for all. They have a good video library and lots of books and games which we all enjoyed in the evening and although it was a warm week and we didn't really need to light a fire we couldn't resist it and it added to the atmosphere. The gardens were lovely, full of fruit trees and gave quite a bit of space for the dog being well enclosed. This is a remote location which suited us just fine but there is a pub that serves good food and an excellent village shop at Drumbeg. We wanted a holiday where we could get away from it all and have time together and Recroy ticked all our boxes. To see so much wildlife was amazing, on the night of our arrival we were stopped by a Stag sauntering across the road in front of our car, quite an experience. Seals came to watch the kids swimming and we were lucky enough to watch a family of Otters playing along the shoreline. Our teenagers, and dog, loved the adventure of it all, being able to just set off on bikes or climb the hills (with maps and compass) straight from the cottage door. What was really nice about the cottage is the spaciousness, it has enough room for everyone to spread out. We only booked it for a week and we didn't get around to doing everything that everyone wanted so we definitely will be going back.

Recroy is ideally situated for exploring the treasures of the Northern Highlands. Excellent facilities for all weather conditions. A very comfortable and pleasant house to live in.

Rated by Mr Gardner reviewed on 8th October 2010

The cottage was a perfect retreat for the mountains and offered much more than any other cottage we have had. With the weather we had, the washing machine and drying facilities were ideal.

Rated by Mr Kerr reviewed on 21st September 2010

Having 2 bathrooms was very useful as was the covered area at the side of the property. What a 'gem', the remoteness made for a relaxing holiday. Beautiful views and an ideal base for exploring NW area of Scotland. Good eating places in Lochinver and Kylescue Hotel. Stunning scenery - beaches, locks and rock faces, something different around every corner. (Didn't even miss the TV !)

Rated by Mrs Peach reviewed on 17th September 2010

We all, including our two teenagers, enjoyed every single aspect of our holiday. The cottage was wonderful with lovely views from every window. It was spacious and had everything we needed. We really loved having a real fire at night after spending our days walking in the hills or on the local beaches. We were also delighted that it really was an 'away from it all' cottage as advertised. Just what we wanted!

We like the relaxed spaciousness of this property. Heating is excellent, it is well equipped, everything is to hand, and one really does feel welcome. We spent a fortnight in this property last year, too - which proves we like the place!

Secluded location with great views, easy access to Drumbeg and to the Lochs in the hills behind, with wildlife (deer etc). Spacious property, relaxing, logs provided.

Rated by Mr Todd reviewed on 4th May 2010

As a family, we could find no fault with the service at all. The cottage was everything the brochure promised and more! It was light, spacious and fairly isolated - exactly what we wanted. The cottage was spotless and had everything we needed for our stay. Nedd itself has only a few houses scattered about and there are no shops, restaurants etc but the location is absolutely ideal for exploring the north-west of Scotland, which is SPECTACULAR! This is the ideal place for a "get away from it all" break. Our children were aged 17, 14 and 10 at the time and they absolutely loved our time at Nedd. None of us wanted to leave! We were surprised at the amount of little restaurants, inns etc which we saw when we travelled about during the week. Also the locals are very friendly wherever you visit. We could never tire of the whole are and all it has to offer. The only comment we would make regarding what could be improved upon re the cottage, would be the garden, which could be fabulous with a little care and attention.

Rated by Johnston family reviewed on 3rd December 2009

Met no-one - so remote that the key was left for us but that was fine by us! It was clean and well equipped but because of its remoteness we might have appreciated a 'welcome pack' of basic foodstuff. If wwe had been given the address of the shop in nearby village we could have arranged for one ourselves. The views of the coast and surrounding moorland were stunning, we were visited by a herd of wild deer and watched buzzards from the living room window. We feasted on fruit from the orchard and were comfortable and warm.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 2nd December 2009

I love Assynt and this is the best place I have stayed there. A characterful building, stocked with a great collection of books. Loads of space and well maintained. A few meters away is a loch stuff full of wild brown trout and a £20 week long ticket from the Assynt crofters gets you access to more lochs than you could visit in a year. The scenery is stunning, the weather always beautiful (even when its raining). If there is a better place in Europe than Assynt for those who love the outdoors, nature, the hills and the sea, then in all my travels I haven't found it. And this is one of the nicest places to stay whilst enjoying your visit.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 2nd December 2009

The remoteness, being able to see a different view from each window. Also, the sea and the hillsides. Plus the valley where red deer came browsing one evening!

Great location, great fishing..the most beautiful part of the Highlands.

Rated by Mr Marshall reviewed on 27th May 2009

We liked the remoteness of the location. We were pleasantly surprised by the number of lovely beaches in the north west of Scotland and would recommend the drive that we did via Durness to John O Groats and back, although it took us all day! The cottage was lovely and warm and it was nice to come home to Recroy (and the log burner) at the end of the day. The dogs loved their holiday too and the side room was very useful when they were wet and sandy from the beach.
