Location Details

Set amidst the rolling hills of the South Shropshire countryside, the village of Cardington boasts the oldest pub in Shropshire - The Royal Oak - which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Its rural location makes a wonderful base whilst sightseeing and the village provides miles of country paths in all directions through the beautiful Shropshire hills, making this an excellent spot for cyclists and walkers. There is a wide variety of birdlife - including buzzards, woodpeckers and ravens, as well as the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, Severn Valley Steam Railway, Stokesay Castle, Shrewsbury, Ludlow and the Ironbridge Gorge – boasting as many as 10 museums. The attractive market towns of Church Stretton - known as 'Little Switzerland' by the Victorians - and Much Wenlock are both within easy driving distance and offer a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants.

A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

Both the cottage and amenities were superb. Sara, the host made us feel super welcome and we will definitely be returning.

We stayed for a week during half term and really enjoyed the experience. Overall enough space for 10 people and everything you needed was available onsite to feel like it was your own home. We used the games room, played tennis and feed the animals so had plenty of fun! The gym & pool was first class. With the location of property being so far away from civilisation they are needed in my opinion. If you want to keep active and have alternatives to long walks then this is worth using. The price to use the gym & pool is fair for Adults but in my opinion should be free for children under 12, they can’t use all the amenities available as the adults can so felt this was harsh to change £10 for kids. The owner was hardly noticeable, but available most of the time if you had any questions. Overall if you are looking to switch off in the countryside and get away from the hustle & bustle of normal life then this is an ideal place to stay :)

We visited to celebrate our Dad’s 60th birthday from across the country. The house was lovely and extremely welcoming. It was spotless and very well equipped with all the essentials. Loved the original features and it was just so cosy in the cold winter months. The surrounding farm is idyllic and the farm animals were the highlight of each day for the children (along with the pony grooming). The facilities were excellent and the swimming pool was a firm family favourite. The host went out of her way to make our visit extremely special and we can’t thank you enough. Wonderful place to stay and you won’t be disappointed!!!

This is a wonderful holiday destination. Exceeded expectations. The house is much larger than the photos portray. There is every conceivable convenience and equipment. Every bedroom has an ensuite or own bathroom. Beds very comfy. Lounge area warm, cozy and comfortable. Great location with great views. The spa was the icing on the cake. Such a luxury, beautifully done. Host very helpful and welcoming. We would definitely recommend and hope to be back.

We had a fantastic weekend at The Olde Cow House to celebrate my 40th birthday with family The house was lovely, clean and very comfortable. The location is beautiful and the children enjoyed the animals and walk in the countryside. We had a lovely time in the swimming pool and games room. There was lots to do in the surrounding area. Thanks again!

Booked quite last minute after a huge search for a home to suit our tastes and needs for the Christmas week. We wanted something with beams, knocks and crannies, odd sofas and chairs and that country look. This house has it all. The last 10 minutes of the drive the road is single track and the with the rain, meeting a car even with a passing space was scary especially with the weight of Christmas in the car. Got stuck once and lost once! This home is worth the drive. I don’t think the pictures do the place justice for eg we worried if we would all fit around the table for Christmas lunch as it looked small but yes it’s huge with lots of room. All rooms en-suite, with Tv’s. There’s a fire but lots of radiators and it was a mild Xmas this year, but we did turn the heating off and use the fire a few times. The children-3 teenage, one under 10 loved the games room, and go carts in fact so did the adults! So much to do, a swimming pool to hire out for your own private use, pigs to feed, chickens to collect eggs from, tennis court children’s play area, swing ball, pool, fussball, a piano, table tennis, carols round the tree, a lovely local pub which is walkable to and dog friendly. This place is perfect for every trip away. We had an amazing Christmas Thank you to the owners

Stayed here for a week towards the end of february this year. The property itself was amazing, so much character, and really well equipped, it has everything you need for a stay. Swimming pool was really good, and there's plenty of other activities for the kids, such as go-karts, tennis, and exploring the farm. The location is excellent; rural enough to be very peaceful, yet within easy access of Shropshires many attractions, making this property a perfect base to explore the local area.

We stayed here for a long weekend with family members to celebrate our daughter's 30th birthday. The barn is absolutely beautiful and the surrounding countryside is also breathtaking. The owner is nice and very helpful. The swimming pool was fun and also the go-carts. Loved feeding the pigs and ponies. Would return and recommend to others.

It was a lovely retreat for a couple of days (for my 50th). Lots of space, lots to do, wonderful countryside. Swimming pool was niche... and nice... (costs extra, but understandable and justified). Owners were very accommodating and helpful. Highly recommended.

Rated by Phil H reviewed on 28th April 2017

A great location in the Shrophsire countryside. Great for families. There were go karts, lots of outdoor areas to play on site and The Olde Cow House was a lovely house. The kitchen was very well equipped, there were childrens toys and books etc. Very homely. A great house. There was a swimming pool which you paid for separately on site. It's a little expensive for what it is and you are only allowed 2 hours in the pool - this is a strict 2 hours so be sure not to overstay. This was my only complaint actually as we were ushered out in a very unrelaxed way to allow members in. We had to be out by 5pm and members are allowed in from 5pm. It would be way better to have a 15 minute pause inbetween as a changeover time as it did taint our visit to the pool a little. Aside from that it was a very enjoyable stay and i would highly recommend it.

Great weekend in a fantastic setting. The Olde Cow House was lovely and warm on arrival, with plenty of character and all the basics that you'd need. Outside was brilliant for children and adults. We were lucky enough to see new born lambs, feed the pigs. Owner was very friendly without being obtrusive.

Rated by Mrs McCarthy reviewed on 17th February 2016

This was one of the best Sykes cottages we have stayed in. The accommodation was spacious and very well equipped, with loads of thoughtful additions for parents like highchair, plates and cutlery, cups, toys and even a pushchair! Outside, we didn't even notice the poor weather - everyone was entertained by the animals, the play area and the tennis court. My son loved collecting eggs from the hens and seeing the pigs. Nearby there is a lovely and very reasonable pub in Cardington and we found plenty to do in the surrounding area. We'd like to go again when the weather is better so we can make more of the countryside walks.

Absolutely fantastic holiday. The cottage was lovely and homely and the attention to detail was fabulous, the owners had thought of everything. There was lots to do around the farm, the kids especially enjoyed the pony rides, feeding the pigs, collecting the eggs and seeing the lambs being born. Along with this the go karts, tennis courts, football nets and games rooms were thoroughly enjoyed by both adults and kids. Plus fabulous surroundings for beautiful family walks and spotting an array of wildlife. We will definitely return again and recommend to family and friends too.

Rated by Miss Bispham reviewed on 24th February 2015

What a fantastic find - the adults and kids loved it. It was great to be able to let the kids go out and play (pedal go-karts were a big hit), and for them to see all the chickens/pigs/sheep/ lambs/dogs/pony. The games room was a nice addition allowing us to play pool, table tennis and table football. A shame we only came for the long weekend - we are planning to return, for a whole week next time.

The Olde Cow House was the idyllic holiday setting for our family. We had a lovely relaxing week and wished we could have stayed longer. The dogs enjoyed the woodland walks and swimming in the lakes and we all appreciated the beautiful surroundings. The Owners have gone to a lot of trouble to ensure visitors have a very enjoyable stay. We will certainly recommend the holiday to family and friends and will no doubt return in the future.

We have stayed here two years in a row, and plan to stay again. The buildings are just gorgeous. Sarah and her family are wonderful, they can't do enough for you. The cottages are all very beautiful, and it is difficult to choose between them. It's very much a family place and caters for grand children and grand parents alike. You can take toddlers for short walks to see horses, chickens, and pigs. Older children have the games area which is suitable for every age,(including adults). Nature lovers can go for long walks in the surrounding countryside, and grandparents can sit on the patio drinking tea and watching all the activities. We have only stayed during the winter; it must be a wonderful place in the summer when you can take picnics and sit by the lake or play a game of rounders in the fields.
