Sometimes referred to as the gateway to Swaledale and the Mallerstang Edge Moors, the pretty village of Nateby is located near the confluence of the River Eden, just over a mile from Kirkby Stephen. This rural, sleepy village boasts a traditional pub and a petrol station which also serves as the village shop. Today, the settlement hosts a variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs, catering for all tastes. Visitors can enjoy many excellent walks and cycle routes through the surrounding countryside, or alternatively explore the magnificent Howgill Fells and the Settle to Carlisle railway line.

This was my third visit to this Cottage and I hope to return again. I think this speaks for itself. The Cottage has everything you need for a holiday Cottage and everything is spotlessly clean. It is situated in a delightful village with easy access to so many different areas. The owners are friendly and helpful.
Beautiful area surrounding this pretty cottage and great for walking, bird-watching & nature lovers. Close to Kirkby Stephen for a variety of shops. The owner is very friendly & helpful, without being intrusive, and Old Cottage itself was very relaxing & peaceful.
An absolutely brilliant place to stay. The owners/neighbours couldn't have been more accommodating or polite! Old Cottage is stunning - like a home from home. We will definitely go again and recommend to friends.
A lovely cottage within walking distance of the local pub. The owners were around if we needed them. Some lovely walks around the area.
Very quiet location, in a wonderful area. Not far from the Lake district and the North Dales National Park. Walks are easy from the cottage. A wonderful and good restaurant at the end of the road (5 minutes by foot). I highly recommend this cottage! The area is splendid!
Lovely scenery and friendly people. Dog friendly pubs.
A very cosy and comfortable cottage, very good location. Could walk from door for some wonderful country walks, also a very short walk to the local pub which was ideal over the New Year period. We arrived to find that all the beds had been made up, also the owner had very kindly provided some basic essentials which were also appreciated.
The cottage is away from the more touristy spots so a peaceful stay is guaranteed. Everything is within an easy drive - we stayed with our two kids aged 4 and 16 months and had no trouble at all day tripping to the safari park, World of Beatrix Potter etc. Nateby and the surrounding villages are beautiful. There is nowhere to do a biggish shop in Nateby but you only have to drive for about 7 minutes to reach the nearest Co-op. The cottage is very well equipped. The kitchen is especially well stocked with dishes, pots and pans etc so if you wished to cook every night it wouldn't be a problem. The owners are very helpful. The accommodation is over two levels so we needed a baby gate. We had no sooner asked than one was produced. We would certainly return here. Beautiful part of the world and perfect little bolt hole. The only thing families with young and busy kids might want to note is that there is no enclosed outside space attached to the property. We were out every day so it didn't bother us.
Superb base for days out; comfortable and clean accommodation. The local pub serves good food.
The location of the cottage was excellent, small quiet village with the most excellent pub just up the road. The food at the Nateby Inn was superb. We were very impressed with the standard of kitchen equipment, and the beds were clean and comfortable.
Very nicely decorated and furnished. Very cosy, felt like home from home. Perfectly situated as a base for exploring the countryside. Delicious food at the pub 50 paces up the road.
Ideal for touring the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Clean and comfortable cottage in a very nice location.
Don't be fooled by the " Oldy worldy " exterior , this is a modern spacious property , with plenty of room for 4 adults .It contains everything you will need for your enjoyable stay . The village of Nateby is small , but welcoming , especially the Nateby Inn , where excellent food and drink is served and the staff go out of their way to help , even including our Rottweiler . ( yes the whole area seems to be dog friendly .) There are plenty of walks locally or you can use the cottage as a base for further afield .Just 10mins walk is Kirby Stephen , where you can find everything you can't get in Nateby. All in all we had a great weeks stay , everything we expected and more . So in the immortal word of arnie "we'll be back !!! "
Beautiful location away from the tourist bustle but close enough to travel to any of the places we wanted to see. Lovely comfortable cottage.
Quiet location, clean village, friendly people, within easy reach of shops, good base for walks and touring.
In all, we had a wonderful holiday, the cottage was lovely and we would not hesitate to return in the future.
Very nice cottage, close to pub and the owners were very friendly!
The weather was good and the location ideal for our walking of sections of the Coast-to-Coast route, supported by ideal accommodation for my wife and I and our dog - thanks.
The cottage was excellent, well placed both for walking and touring. Very good meals at the village pub - only 100 yards away. The location was very quiet but only a mile from Kirkby Stephen with shops and a beautiful church.
The Eden Valley and the surrounding countryside were beautiful. There were lots of wonderful walks from the cottage and it was never necessary to drive far to access others. The owner of the cottage was both friendly and helpful about anything you needed to know.
I've stayed at this cottage for well over 10 years and the accommodation and setting are both superb. I've become a firm friend of the owner who is always very friendly and helpful.
Old Cottage was set in a lovely place very rural and picturesque, nice town only 30 min walk thru countryside... bed in downstairs room extremely comfortable .. Nice owners next door.. No towels are provided. so bring your own and extra loo paper ;) the shower took some figuring out, although we couldv'e asked the lovely Lady to show us when we first arrived. overall a pleasant stay.. Thankyou :)
The owners were brilliant and very helpful. This is our first time in Cumbria - the walking was excellent.
Great if you want to escape and be cut off from the rest of the world for a few days as we did.
This was a lovely cottage to stay in. We took Jenny's advice and headed up the Eden Valley when we went to York - just stunning. So this a great base for exploring. The location takes you off the beaten path, which is exactly what you need to do when in the UK, but it's still close enough to the motorway to get places easily. The beds were comfy and the home well equipped. No internet or washing machine - not a problem for a shorter stay :) Jenny and John were friendly and welcoming, but not intrusive :) And the local pub serves great meals :)
Old cottage is a very comfortable and cosy cottage in an ideal location, with fantastic walks from the doorstep and everything you could possibly need is available in nearby village.
The cottage was spotless and very nicely decorated. It was warm and cosy and had a "home from home" feel about it. The location was excellent with beautiful countryside and local walks. The owners lived next door and were friendly and helpful and even put a pint of milk in the fridge so we could have a cup of tea when we arrived. I have already recommended the cottage to a friend and I would not hesitate to book it again in the future.
Had a great week, we love the area and discovered some new walks and places to visit, The accomodation was very homely and the owners who lived next door, gave us a lot of information about the area. Would reccomend this cottage to anyone.
It was a very nice location, ideal for sightseeing and walking. Quiet and peaceful. Pretty village. Would like to thank you for an excellent service. Will probably use this cottage again as it is close to our friend's in Appleby who we will want to visit again soon.
A very pleasant homely cottage and an ideal base. The owners are particularly nice warm and friendly.
The village was ideally placed for both the Lakes and Yorkshire. The owners were polite and helpful and the cottage itself was comfortable. It has a nice walk into Kirkby Stephen and a long hill walk which I did either morning or night. Cannot recommend the location enough!
The cottage owners were very friendly and the cottage conducive to a great holiday.
The cottage was as excellent as ever and I've stayed there for many years.
A very peaceful setting with access to many other places.
I enjoyed my stay @ The Old Cottage. It's a great base for touring the surrounding area. The accommodation is very adequate, and kept in good order by the friendly owners Jenny and John. The nearby Black Bull Hotel is a delightful place to have a refreshment and enjoy a home cooked meal.
A very comfortable cottage in a beautiful area. The owners are happy and friendly, they even left a fresh pint of milk for our arrival, very thoughtful.
Good location, plenty of walks and drives directly from the house. The nearby pub served good food and the owners were also very pleasant.
The owner was very warm and friendly, she gave us lots of tips about the village and the local area. Tea, coffee, sugar and milk were available when we arrived. The cleanliness of the cottage was exceptional, good information on the local area in the form of booklets and leaflets. The cottage was always warm and the water was always hot when we needed it and an electric fire was available at all times in the lounge.
Clean, comfortable and did not cost the earth. Owners were welcoming but not intrusive. They even got my sister an appointment to see a doctor as she was not well when we arrived. Would stay there again.
Exactly what we were looking for with regard location. Owner was very friendly and welcoming and the cottage was lovely.
I have stayed at this cottage 8 or 9 times which is testament in itself to the property and location. The owner has always been very helpful and friendly to the extent that we now consider ourselves to be good friends. Nateby enables easy access to both the Dales and the Lakes and has a rail service within easy travelling distance. The upgrade ot the lounge with new settees and television make the stay even more enjoyable.
The location of the cottage was great, there was plenty to do for the whole family.
The upgrade of the lounge with new settees and TV make the property even more comfortable than before.
Easy to lokate, ample amenities for comfortable pleasent stay.
We wanted to be able to relax and chill out this was an excellent place to do that. It was good for walks and animal friendly for pets under control. The owner is very friendly and helpful, living next door. The area is within easy reach of the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales.
A good place to start our walks. Owner next door was very welcoming.
Clean, comfortable, charming cottage. More than adequate for holidays.
We have never stayed anywhere in 33 years that has been of such high standards re cleanliness. Excellent!
Great area for walkers. Kirkby Stephens is a very friendly town.
