Reviews

We've stayed at this cottage on several occasions. The village is lovely and the local area has lots to do and see and we return again and again to the area. The cottage itself is very cosy, has a well equipped kitchen and an excellent bathroom. It also now has the added advantage of wifi, which is really useful. As per a previous reviewer, there was also no toilet roll provided and I don't know if the cleaning regime has changed but some of the kitchen cupboards were a bit sticky! Come prepared with some basics, however the Spar shop next door is handy, well stocked and open until 8 pm and there is also a very convenient and excellent Spar at Calver crossroads (highly recommend Charli's Chooks eggs). One point to note is that there is now a large fan (for the air conditioning in the shop) situated directly by the front garden area. As the weather was very warm in the week we stayed, this was running at full speed from 7.30 am for a while and also generally from mid afternoon until just before the shop shut. I do find this kind of noise quite intrusive and felt unable to use the garden or have the cottage door open when it was running. A real shame as we were hoping for a quiet week to escape from noisy neighbours and a similarly noisy pool pump. So no longer a top score from us and we will look to stay somewhere in the area but quieter next time.

We absolutely loved our stay in Clematis Cottage! For such a tiny house, it has so much room and the layout is perfect. The beds are comfortable and the bathroom is a really good size. The village is perfectly situated to be able to visit all over the Peaks, whether by foot or by car so no matter what your holiday aims are, this is the perfect place to stay.

What a lovely cottage! In a charming village with great access to everything you need including the unmissable chatsworth house! We would also highly recommend the Italian in the village, which served delicious food and seemed very popular! The cottage itself was spotless and had been presented beautifully, fab bathroom and was perfect for 2 couples with 2 really good sized bedrooms. Our only criticism is that the basic essentials were a bit lacking in that we had no hand soap in the bathroom or kitchen and we had to buy our own toilet roll, but I doubt this is normal and I'm sure was just a slip up. The shop next door was well equipped and very handy being open until 8pm. Overall we feel we scored lucky with this cottage and would love to return!

I thought the cottage was absolutely gorgeous and was a real home from home. It was very cosy and warm with everything you could ever need. The fire in the living room was lovely and the sofas were so comfortable. We were also provided with lots of useful information on the surrounding countryside. It was just perfect and I hope to return.

We had another lovely week at your cottage. The weather was great, including the snow on boxing day when I thoroughly enjoyed my walk round Baslow. We walked on the Chatsworth estate, we ate in the Old Eyre Arms and shopped in the quaint little shops at Bakewell. I can whole heartily recommend this cottage.

We liked the position of the property as we had no transport of our own and were able to use public transport quite easily. Also the property was perfect to enable us to do lots of walking in a beautiful area.

Cottage in a great village with excellent pubs and restaurants, very central for the whole area. Really enjoyed our stay and would definitely re-book to stay here again.

Lovely spot for both walking, cycling and sightseeing. Plenty of places to choose from to eat in the village and a well stocked shop next door. The weather was good which was an added bonus.

Rated by Mrs Murphy reviewed on 14th May 2014

This charming cottage ideally set in the village of Baslow for exploring the Peaks. Numerous walks from the doorstep including Chatsworth House and its grounds. Many attractions within a 30 minute drive and Sheffied only an hour away. The cottage has been renovated to a very high standard but still maintains the charm of an old cottage. It was clean and well decorated throughout. The kitchen was well equipped, the two bedrooms were spacious and the rolled top bath was an added luxury especially after a long walk! The sitting room was welcoming and had a gas fire wood-burner ideal for those chilly Autumn nights. There is a small well stocked and well used village shop next to the cottage but in no way interferes with the peace and quiet of the cottage. I would definitely recommend a stay at Clematis Cottage.

We have always loved the Peak District, and in particular the area we stayed at. It was a very comfortable, cosy base to explore the area. The owners made us feel very welcome, they were friendly, accommodating and warm without being intrusive. Lovely hosts! A totally relaxing and pleasant experience which we will definitely be repeating.

We have always loved the Peak District and in particular the area we stayed at. It was a very comfortable/cosy base to explore the area e.g. walks to Chatsworth and walks around Baslow, meals out as well as cooking in and visits to nearby towns eg Bakewell, Buxton The owners, David and Christine made us feel very welcome with complimentary wine, bread and milk. They were friendly, accommodating and warm without being intrusive. Lovely hosts! A totally relaxing and pleasant experience which we will definitely be repeating. Thank you David and Christine.

We had some drizzly days while we stayed here but it was a lovely cottage and so homely that when the weather was so bad we just enjoyed the cottage to relax in. The owners welcomed us warmly. Its location is excellent for access to Sheffield, Chesterfield, Bakewell and the Peak District in general. We thoroughly enjoyed walking from the cottage across the fields to Chatsworth (a not to be missed attraction), and the Bakewell markets on the Monday. Would recommend this cottage.

The property was very well appointed, and met all our needs.

Rated by Mr Hall reviewed on 7th October 2013

This delightful cottage lives up to the pictures. The twin beds are so comfortable, every room has been furnished with loving care - things look nice and are comfortable to use. Having the owners next door meant we could ask anything without feeling we were being a nuisance. This is the best location you could ask for - walking distance into Chatsworth House and park, an excellent shop open all hours and nice pubs to walk to. We only used the car once during our stay. This is probably the best cottage we have ever stayed in.

Rated by Mr Shepherd reviewed on 24th June 2013

The furnishing and decoration was unique, appealing and comfortable. It felt like a home not just a holiday let. Proximity to shop and owners in case of need yet private and tucked away. We could walk to Chatsworth and other wonderful walks in the round.

The house is very well equipped and it is conveniently placed next door to the local Spa who are also the key holders. The house is wonderfully warm and cosy. A range of Dvds / games are provided. The bedrooms are a good size. The bathroom is clean with separate shower and large bath. Parking is not a problem at all and there are lovely walks from the front door. Local pubs/shops are within walking distance.

Clematis Cottage, Baslow, was the first cottage that we have been to. I had originally booked this as a Christmas Present for my mum and dad. We have had a fantastic time. The owners were very friendly, and we could not fault anything at all. We'll be back !!

Rated by Miss Walker reviewed on 7th January 2013

We really enjoyed our week in Clematis Cottage which is small but comfortable and very well equipped. The owners were welcoming and handy if needed as they own the shop next door. Baslow itself is a lovely village and well placed for visiting local places of interest or for walking. Our only criticism is that the fan for the shop is situated right outside the double bedroom window which made this room unusable for us as my husband is susceptible to noise. We could hear it in the twin bedroom but did manage to shut it out. We appreciate this is not the fault of the owners but perhaps guests should be warned beforehand so that they can decide if it would affect their stay.

This is a gorgeous cottage. It is exactly what you hope a country cottage will be. The kitchen is superbly equipped for a holiday cottage with everything you could need to cook a meal, although with the close proximity of lovely pubs and restaurants its very tempting to eat out. Having the village shop next door is also a bonus. I chose the cottage for the location - being able to walk to Chatsworth House in half an hour is just great and excellent bus services to Sheffield, Chesterfield, Bakewell etc meant I could leave the car behind for a change. Owners were charming hosts and very welcoming. A lovely break!

A lovely cottage in a beautiful village which is close to Chatsworth. Walking from the house or catching a bus to Bakewell means you don't need to use the car every day. This was ideal for the two of us although the stairs are a bit steep for older people or small children but a very quirky cottage. Lovely bedrooms and bathroom appear to be bigger than downstairs.

Rated by Mrs Tonner reviewed on 10th August 2012

I really cannot rate this property highly enough. My friend and I spent a most enjoyable week at the cottage. It was very comfortable and quiet. This part of the Peak District National park was new to me, but the surrounding area was beautiful and interesting. I would also like to mention, that as a seasoned traveller, I found that everywhere we went, whatever we did, we felt welcome. Also, in eateries and shops and especially at Chatsworth we felt we received value for money.

Rated by Mr Mawson reviewed on 3rd July 2012

The cottage was very clean and tastefully furnished throughout. On arrival, there were thoughtful gifts to welcome us. We appreciated the fact that the owners have taken great care in researching not only the history of the cottage, but also included local walks and drives in the area in the informative folder in the lounge. Location excellent for touring the area. The bedrooms and bathroom were excellent and we found the beds extremely comfortable. It would be unfair to criticise anything as the owners had done everything they could to make this a cottage to return to in future-and we intend to do just that!

We stayed at this cottage while we were visiting our daughter at uni in sheffield. Once there you have no need to use your car - shop is next door, walk to chatsworth park and other locations. Everything warm and comfy.

The cottage had charm and character and the proprietors had made a real effort to research its history for the benefit of guests. They had thoughtfully provided details of drives around the area. The cottage was quiet as it was situated away from the main road yet not isolated.

Rated by Mr Wood reviewed on 29th April 2012

Location and styling of cottage, well equipped, warm and cosy.

Rated by Ms Hammond reviewed on 18th March 2012

The cottage is in a lovely village in a convenient location. The standard of the cottage was excellent and was spotlessly clean. The decor was of a very high standard and had been chosen with care to complement the surroundings. The fixtures and fittings are of a very high standard and nothing about this cottage has been done on the cheap. We had a lovely stay and will definitely be visiting again. The owners had gone to a great deal of trouble to ensure a warm welcome for visitors including fresh bread, milk and a bottle of wine in the fridge.

Rated by Dr Stocks reviewed on 27th February 2012

The location was great - not too far from Sheffield, and we could also walk from the door into the peak district. The welcome groceries on arrival were a very kind thought.

Rated by Mrs Devereux-jones reviewed on 6th February 2012

The cottage was beautiful and it was very handy that it was next door to a shop. The comings and goings of the shop doesn't interfere with your stay at all, as the cottage is well screened. The cottage itself is well stocked and the owners have thought carefully about the comfort/entertainment aspect of your stay. There are books, dvds, games for the children (and adults), a highchair, travel cot and the kitchen is well stock with everything that you'll need during your stay. We found it a lovely touch that we had been left a welcome pack. The location of the cottage is ideal too. Its a short walk to the local pub and even the grounds of Chatsworth house. We had a lovely stay and wouldn't hestitate to book the cottage again.

The cottage has been delightfully restored and is in a beautiful village which is central to so many places of interest in the Peak District. The owners left a substantial welcome gift pack and were quick to respond to a problem we had with the TV. We loved sitting in the garden after our days out, so pretty. The area is superb, and we were blessed with extremely good weather. It was a pleasure to stay there.

The cottage had both a homely atmosphere and excellent facilities. The location met all our expectations, and the proximity to the village shop was most useful. Compared with other holiday homes we have experienced in various countries, this was one of the very best!

Rated by Mr Welsh reviewed on 10th August 2011

We stayed here for our second week in the Peak District as part of our honeymoon. We were very glad we had booked a different cottage for our second week as our first did not go well. This cottage was a lovely counteraction to that and meant we did not leave the Peak District with only bad memories. As there was just the two of us, the cottage was very spacious. For 4 adults it would be a bit tight but for a couple it was luxurious and for a family it would be perfectly comfortable. The cottage has a wonderful history, which the owners have thoughtfully explained in a file in the cottage. It is next to the village shop, which is very convenient but the carefully screened garden means you are not affected by the comings and goings in the shop. It is only a few minutes walk to several pubs and restaurants and Baslow itself has a really lovely feel. We treated ourselves to a meal at Fischers at Baslow Hall, which we would recommend to anyone wanting a special meal during their stay and getting a taxi there and back, even given the rural location was very reasonable. The cottage is decorated to a high standard for a holiday home and is very comfortable and cosy - the fire in the living room was lovely to take the chill off, even on a June evening! We found the beds very comfortable - this is a personal thing as I prefer a firm mattress for my back but I would not have thought it too hard for others. It also was equipped with everything you need and has plenty of storage space which makes for a more pleasant stay. It is easy to walk to Chatsworth from the cottage, which we did and then around the estate. All in all the cottage is set in a great location, easy to get to lots of places both walking and driving and we would recommend to all.

Rated by Mrs McCartney reviewed on 18th July 2011

Very relaxing location, well located for Chatsworth and other Derbyshire sites of interest. Friendly owners who run shop next door which was very convenient. Whilst cottage was small it served our needs and was reasonably priced.

Rated by Mr Godbee reviewed on 6th June 2011

Such a pretty cottage and very well located. We enjoyed a quiet and peaceful week with easy access to many areas of the Peak District. Pretty and comfortably furnished, with a lovely bathroom and well equipped kitchen. Sitting room was cosy and is fitted with a convenient gas-fired stove which was nice on the chillier evenings. Whilst the cottage sleeps four (two generous sized bedrooms and lots of storage upstairs), the living space downstairs was compact and 4 people around the kitchen table would be a bit tight. However, lots to do in the area and plenty of games and books in the cottage would keep younger children amused. A good location for older travellers seeking peace and quiet - however the cottage stairs were steep and could be awkward for some. Could we fault anything? Perhaps a slightly more comfortable mattress on the master bed, and a more powerful shower would be nice, but its just being picky really. In summary, we absolutely loved our week there and will return again.

It was such a nice place to stay and I hope to go back.

Loved the goodies when entering into the cottage, very welcoming.
