Reviews

I'd like to say lots of nice things about our stay at this property but my experience was completely overshadowed by our last night there. For some reason one of the Lodge Farm Barn vans was parked in the farmyard and it's quite loud Freezer Unit would run for about 10 minutes every 10-30 minutes ALL NIGHT! One completely sleepless night later and I'm afraid this has spoilt my experience of Lodge Farm Barn.

Difficulty in locating the property for the 1st time, had to ask a local. The wording on the boulder by the road can't be seen unless you're right on top if it, by which time, you've passed the turning. Maybe if it was painted in white, it might be easier to spot. The Stable was a lovely open plan building and already contained many kitchen essentials for you to use (sauces, jams, spices etc), there was a freeview tv along with a selection of DVDs. Also there are a number of books to read. However the WiFi is very intermittent as is phone signal (we are on O2) (All is as described on the website). We decided to take a walk up the steps to the garden to relax after our journey. Here we found the gazebo, firepit and bbq to the right and the covered hot tub to the left. The photos on the website show a well maintained garden area around both gazebo and hot tub, but there were actually a lot of tall weeds/grasses/flowers which attracted an abundance of flies/bees/butterflies. The oak tree by the side of the stable which also covered over the hot tub had become very much overgrown since the photos were taken on the website too. From first sitting in the garden my husband was being bitten by flies.. Not a good start. Later that evening, we decided to get in the hot tub (the main reason we booked the stay) within seconds of climbing in, hoards of flies appeared, you just couldn't relax without trying to swat them away ( I think I fished out about a dozen within 5 minutes!) So I got out, dropped the cover back and decided to leave it until later. About an hour later, I tried again. This time all seemed good for 10 minutes and my husband decided to join me...no sooner had he sat down, there appeared a huge mass of midges who were hell bent on flying at you, it was awful! Needless to say out we got and went inside...Not what we hoped to be doing on the first evening of our little relaxing holiday. After dark (about 10.30pm), we thought we'd give it one more go.... Yayyyyy no flies... We managed to get about 45 minutes in there. I do think if the tree was pruned back and the grasses cut down this might reduce the number of flies. My husband couldn't sit outside without getting bitten, and inside it was way too warm. Certainly not the 3 night break away we'd planned and hoped for and it was getting quite stressful after the 1st night..we were there to relax and it wasn't happening. The following day we went out, but on returning early afternoon, we tried sitting in the garden again... Short lived as the flies came back. So we sat on the step at the side, not as many flies, but at least we had some fresh air and not sat indoors. Louisa the owner got back and she tried her very best to help us out of the utter disappointment we were feeling (and for that I'd like to thank her for), but we were past the point of wanting to stay on and ended up packing up to drive the 260 miles back home after just 24 hours. I really can't fault the Stable or the peaceful area (or Louisa for trying so desperately hard to help) but we'd booked the property specifically for the hot tub and we just couldnt use it in daylight hours for all the flies.

We enjoyed a fantastic break at The Lodge Farm Barn. The Barn itself is welcoming and well equipped. We made good use of the wood burning stove and the local surrounding area for walking and cycling. The owners were excellent hosts and we would certainly recommend booking a stay here if you are travelling to the beautiful Wye Valley.

The position of the cottage meant we could enjoy peace and quiet but allowed easy access to places of interest, of which there were many. It was also very comfortable.

An excellent location if you like a secluded country cottage. The Barn conversion had a quaint, rustic feel, great views, and was ideal for exploring the Forest of Dean. The owners were friendly but not intrusive.

Rated by Mr Sayer reviewed on 27th September 2014

It was a lovely place to stay, so quiet and good for relaxation. If it was not that far away from Germany we would stay there every summer! The Family was very helpful when we needed something and the barn was a wonderful home for that week. We had everything we wanted and we would recommend it to people who would like to recover in really quiet surroundings.

We loved the barn, and the personal touches from the owners made it extra special.

Rated by Mrs Williams reviewed on 28th December 2013

Our hosts were the most gentle of folk, always available, but not intrusive. This tucked away little gem will be used by us again and again. The on-site farmhouse kitchen produces some excellent 'homemade' food, and should be tried by all visitors.

This property was of a high standard in a lovely setting. It was perfect for a quiet, relaxing break particularly from urban life! The owners were on site and were very welcoming, particularly as we arrived, the cottage was warm and a log fire had been lit.....the cottage had everything to meet our needs and I would recommend this as a perfect base to explore the surrounding area.

Rated by Miss Keppie reviewed on 13th November 2012

The warm welcome from the owners, who were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The barn was in a lovely location and had everything we needed, even a dolls house to keep our daughter entertained. The log burner was also well used, perfect.

An excellent barn conversion, well thought out and equipped.

Rated by Mr Twigg reviewed on 17th October 2012

Good location for accessing all sorts of things to do, friendly hosts (and dogs) but not intrusive. Barn conversion comfortable and just what we hoped for, a peaceful scenic location, a lovely setting. We would be happy to stay again.

Rated by Mrs Stafford reviewed on 23rd September 2012

This cottage is set in a very quiet locality. It is not really suitable for anyone without transport because of the out of the way location. The cottage is reasonably well equipped although some additional items such as a tray would be helpful. Because of the location mobile telephone reception is virtually zero. Although Internet connection is available it is difficult within the cottage. A good location for visiting the forest of dean and the welsh border.

A peaceful retreat, with all mod cons.

Rated by Mrs Locke reviewed on 28th July 2012

A FABULOUS barn conversion to the highest of standards. Light, airy and very comfortable and welcoming. The owners were very friendly and helpful but they did not breathe down your neck every time you stirred. A beautiful spot - we shall definitely return.

Rated by Mr Bliss reviewed on 16th September 2011

Very peaceful setting, yet not far from Ross-on-wye. Owners were very friendly and helpful.

Rated by Mr Blackburn reviewed on 22nd August 2011

The barn was in a beautiful location in a very peaceful valley. Friendly and helpful hosts. Extremely well equipped with a wide range of kitchen equipment, hammock, chimaera, BBQ, toys, books etc. It was useful to have WiFi and the apple cake was a delicious welcome. The nearby river was great for kayaking and local walking is good with footpaths from the cottage. Ross-on-Wye was only a short distance away with all its amenities including the town swimming pool. We had a very relaxing week and would thoroughly recommend it.
