Reviews

My husband, my 3 children inc a baby and I stayed here for a few days and loved it. The house was well located near the amenities in Berwick and the sights of Bamburgh and Lindisfarne. The house was clean, nicely furnished and comfortable. It was cold when we arrived and took some time to figure out the heating but once we did it was cosy. The log fire was nice to have too. We arranged for a grocery delivery to be ready for when we arrived and found that the host had very generously unpacked them and put the chilled and frozen items away. The bedrooms were comfortable and we enjoyed good nights sleep. A travel cot was made up with bedding for our baby. The bathroom was spacious with enough towels and toiletries. However we felt the shower pressure was quite weak and overall could have done with a more thorough scrub, especially the bathroom on the second floor. We didn't use the bedroom on the second floor but it was a nice space for the kids to place hide and seek in and views were lovely from up there (sunset photo below). The views were lovely from all windows, you can even see the sea from the back bedroom window. The kitchen was clean and well equipped for our needs. On the second morning we did notice some slug trails between the kitchen table and window; we cleaned it up and that night scattered some salt under the window that night and didn't see any more. It was very convenient to have use of a dishwasher and washing machine including detergents. Highly recommend the cottage.

Barmoor retreat is a beautiful house, hard work and thought has gone into making this house a perfect holiday home, Dave and Sue are very nice, Dave checked in on us to make sure we were okay, Sue emailed my husband to make sure we were safe after she heard someone had an accident in Lowick. The house is warm and has a friendly feel. It is clean and comfortable, I would recommend This house to anyone who wants a lovely holiday in Northumberland.

My wife, grandfather, kids and I had the pleasure of staying at the Barmoor Retreat for a weeks break in Northumberland. We found house online and was swift and easy to book. Very reasonable price for a house of this standard. Spottless throughout, comfortable, homely, warm and very peaceful. Loved sitting round table at night after dinner feeling warmth from the aga and the wood burner in the living room was very relaxing. Had the best night's sleep I have had in ages in lovely double room on first floor and kids disappeared to top floor bedroom with ensuite shower and toilet which gave us all peace. Northumberland is stunning and we made most of each day looking forward to coming back to this house. You can hear a pin drop at night and the stars on a clear night were breathtaking. Sue and Dave are perfect hosts and have no doubt we will visit again in future. Thanks for a lovely holiday home for the week as we absolutely loved it.

This is a home from home, warm and cozy, lovely welcome pack on arrival was well received. Water is piping hot and plenty of it if you fancy a soak in a decent sized bath. Everything is here you could possibly want, the beds are super comfy( I would quite like to take one home) or perhaps we could just move in! Ideal location for coast and Berwick. Take a trip to the Farne Islands while you're here.

This is a great place, to take a break, relax, sight see, chill out, go motoring, walking, cycling or golfing. It is accessible to all of Northumberland delights, and just off the A1, well equipped with all home comforts, (actually, even better), with use of a log fire, with a lovely modern kitchen with all the essential appliances. Spacious bathroom and bedrooms were delightfully decorated. Both owners were fantastic, so friendly and helpful on our first visit to this part of Northumberland. Nearby we enjoyed visits to Bamburgh Castle, Alnwick, Holy Island, Coldstream, Berwick on Tweed, and sampled great food, all reasonably priced, in many pubs and restaurants and cafes close by, suggested by the owners. A real retreat in the countryside, yet near to Northumberland historic sites, beaches and market towns. Even when the weather really not too kind we enjoyed time inside, reading, relaxing in the comforts of this lovely place.

Sometimes when you leave a review you KNOW that it may give you a problem when you want to go back to that property, as your review may just be the one that makes a 'searcher' book the week you are after....well,I hope it does as the owners and property ARE a delight, and we would move our week away just to make sure this property is free...yes, seriously. ! Everything about the property booked was excellent. From the porch ( for muddy shoes) to the front room with open fire, to the big kitchen...it was exactly as we had hoped for. We cannot think of anything that needed doing, replacing or changing about our 'home' for the week. It was of the highest maintenance, very very clean, warm, and a delight to use as a base for the week. Enough cutlery, pots, pans, plates, WINE GLASSES, beer glasses ( you know...the important stuff !!) and bedding...board games..books to read, maps of the area....a welcome basket AND small milk in the fridge......two showers and toilets, with everything in good working order...it really was just like being at home. Will we go back....OH YES !!! The owners were superb in all communication, and helped make our new baby's first ever holiday ....EASY !

If I had one wish it would be that we could have moved this cottage just a couple of miles nearer the coast. Despite looking at maps before we booked, we misjudged it and it is about 5 miles inland. That said, it's only about 15/20mins to Bamburgh and Holy Island, so still a nice base point. A lot of the attractions feel a bit far away - Alnwick, Dunstanburgh etc - but I think that given how Northumberland is, where ever you stay there will be something that feels like it's a bit of a drive :) That's probably the only thing I could even remotely class as a downside to this cottage, and that is clutching at straws. It was lovely and clean. The Aga heating meant it was cosy and warm (which you would hope you wouldn't need in August, but we did!). The rooms were great sizes, and our youngest (10) loved having the loft room to himself. Plenty of crockery and cutlery in the well-equipped kitchen/diner, and the little shelf of tipples was a lovely touch, even though we didn't have any (A great range of spirits, and a little honesty box to put a bit of cash in if you have any - fab idea!). I was on standby for a few work related things while we were staying there, so the WiFi/Broadband was a welcome addition. Ever so slightly slower than at home, but perfect for being able to check email and book tickets for castles! It's a terraced property, and we did hear the odd noise (dog barking etc) from one side, but never enough to be a disturbance. Would definitely recommend this cottage if you're heading up that way.

We were astounded at how good the property was and the extremely friendly welcome. It was our first time of exploring Northumberland and we were amazed at how much there was to see within a 20-30 mile radius. We have no hesitation in recommending this cottage to anyone wishing to holiday in the area.

This is a brilliant property to stay in and convenient for all the places we visited. There are so many things to see and do in Northumbria; we will definitely have to visit the area again. Even on the one really wet day we had there were options and the wood burner in the lounge meant a cosy warm evening afterwards.

The cottage was absolutely wonderful and spotlessly clean with everything provided that we could possibly need. The cottage was also very warm which was great to come back to after our walks every day. And overall it's in a great location for visit all the amazing attractions that Northumberland has to offer. I would (and actually already have), recommend this lovely property to friends and colleagues alike.

This house was beyond excellent, it was warm and cosy, with all the facilities and more that you could require, including free wifi. It's in an excellent central position for exploring this part of Northumbria, and close to amenities. We loved the views across fields from the front and rear of the house.

The cottage was lovely, a real home from home. Great care has been taken to make this a wonderful, comfortable holiday home. We've been staying in holiday cottages for over 15 years and this has to be one of the best we've rented. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends and family.

Had easy access to the coast and was handy for Berwick. A cosy and comfortable cottage, decorated to a high standard. Loved the log burning stove and the welcome pack. A perfect "getaway" for us to unwind and relax.

We were very surprised about the quality of the Barmoor Retreat, it was faultless; very comfortable, homely, spotlessly clean and with added touches such as the log burner being already laid for us to light. The owners are very friendly and had also left us a welcome snack for our first night which was a lovely touch. The area is beautiful with loads of things to see and do, highly recommend the area and accommodation.

Rated by Mrs Hendry reviewed on 1st September 2014

The accommodation was extremely comfortable and equipped to the highest standard. Towels were included and a bottle of wine with cheese and biscuits was waiting for us! The area was peaceful and quiet but within easy reach of the coast and the Cheviot hills with all their attractions.

Rated by Mr Payton reviewed on 18th August 2014

On arrival, the travel cot was laid out beautifully with a teddy, which welcomed our baby to the house. The cottage had large, comfortable rooms and we really felt at home there. The cottage was spotlessly clean, with excellent bedding. The garden was pleasant to sit in. In terms of location it was a nice 15 minute walk to the centre of the village, and the route was accessible with a pram. It was also nice that the owner checked that we were ok after a few days. There was plenty of hot water and the shower and water pressure were excellent. The cottage is in a super location for the many attractions of Northumberland, which we loved visiting.

Rated by Mr Woodhouse reviewed on 30th June 2014
