Location Details

Chirnside takes its name from the ancient Cairn that stood on a hill to the east of the village. It is perched on the ridge between the historic, walled town of Berwick-on-Tweed and Duns, overlooking the Tweed Valley and the distant Cheviots. The village itself is incredibly picturesque and prides itself on its many beautiful gardens. Eight miles away, you'll find the glorious, sandy beaches of Coldingham and Eyemouth, with its working harbour. Nearby attractions also include Maderston, Mellerstain, Paxton House and Ayton Castle. The grounds of the Hirsel ad Duns Castle Estate are also open to the public, as is St Abbs Head; a nature reserve run by the National Trust. The River Tweed provides fantastic opportunities for fishermen, walkers and bird-watchers and there is much evidence of the region's historic and turbulent past to be found in the spectacular countryside.

From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

Absolutely perfect. This was our second visit and it was wonderful. Spotlessly clean, furnished beautifully, really well equipped, lovely and warm. Smashing owners who made us very welcome. Very dog friendly. Enclosed garden at the back and lots of extras for the dogs, bowls, towels etc. Very generous and useful welcome back with everything we needed for our breakfasts throughout our stay. Such a delightful and restful place to stay. Highly recommend.

Perfect retreat with everything you need. Cottage is warm, cosy, a great place to explore this beautiful area and coastline. There is a co op in the village for essentials, but what makes this property stand out is the way it is lovingly looked after by the owners of the farm (Harelow). Sue and Steve welcomed us on arrival and any questions we had and information about the local area. Don’t be fooled by the outside on arrival as once you walk in, it’s truly lovely. The fresh flowers and welcome basket of locally produced goods were a lovely touch. It’s easy to see why so many people return to this cottage, as we will be doing again next year. It has a lovely enclosed safe garden for our dogs, and the walks on your doorstep are endless. Well equipped kitchen, even dishwasher and washing machine. If your looking for a peaceful retreat to get away from a busy life, then this is the one. Comfortable bed and nice hot shower. Honestly could go on and on. I know I’ll probably struggle to find something that compares in other uk cottage holidays. Places of interest (in the car).. Berwick upon tweed, about an hours drive from Edinburgh and our favourite was St Abbs, Coldingham bay and Eyemouth (the bakery there is superb!) We we’re also blessed with perfect blue skies every day!

There are not enough superlatives to describe how wonderful the Garden House was - it had everything and more that you could possibly need or want down to lovely toiletries, thick soft towels and a super welcome basket The facilities were exceptional - we have stayed at many self catering cottages and never had a full size fridge and freezer, dishwasher and a washer dryer Sue and Steve were wonderful hosts, helpful and always avaialble, ready for a chat A super safe enclosed garden which our dog Molly enjoyed Plenty of walks nearby - just over 2 mile round trip to shops We cannot reccommend highly enough and hope to return one day

Just returned from garden Cottage today. Sue was there to meet us on arrival which was lovely. A lovely hamper was left which had bread, butter, milk, porridge, honey, eggs and ground coffee. The cottage had everything you could need for a holiday. One of the best equipped cottage we've been to. The garden is gorgeous and perfect for dogs. Was up one morning at 4 o'clock and the stars were amazing. Even saw shooting stars. Something you miss in a city. Would 100% recommend this accommodation. Thank you Sue and Steve for a perfect stay.

Near to Berwick Upon Tweed in a farm setting. Beautiful little cottage clean, fresh & well equipped.definitely a home from home, could happily live there. Owners complying with COVID-19 guidelines which is reassuring. Enclosed garden is perfect for sitting in or letting your furry friend have a mooch. Village centre is a short walk although the cottage is on a busy road there is a grassy footpath. Brilliant area for walkers, cyclists & runners. Footpaths are well marked & signposted Berwick upon tweed free parking but have to buy a parking disc for parking zones £1 initial payment ...lasts forever. Regular trains to & from berwick to Edinburgh save the hassle of driving. Railway parking £3.50 . St Abbs & Spittal both lovely beaches.Eyemouth not so nice.

Not too far from Berwick-upon-Tweed, just across the border into Scotland. Used to be home of the Jim Clarke display which has now moved to become a full museum in nearby Duns. Over the years we have stayed in many holiday locations and villa lets and none, other than the extremly expensive, have been as well equiped as The Garden House. It is dog friendly and looking at the visitors book we were the only booking for years that did not take our hound with us. Self catering but no need to take the staples for cooking; its all there on arrival.. Local Coop and Post Office/Newagent in the village; under 5 minutes in the car (a necessity) and 10 minutes to Duns, the nearest little town. Only gripe, free WiFi but BT TV is a little limited in its subscription (basic terestial and some sport). Fully fitted home from home; would like to have stayed longer; 2-3 weeks would have been perfect.. Plenty to do, easy reach to Edinburgh, Alnwick and the Cheviot Hills. Coastal views and beaches a must. Trips to Holy Island and the Farne islands when the weather is right. We had the sun every day when the forcast was for wall to wall rain. The owner thoughtfully provides a list of her top-ten recommentde local restaurants and some take away and home delivery recommendations.

We booked this holiday to celebrate a big birthday with no fuss, this house was perfect for our needs. Beautifully decorated with everything we needed. Sue and Steve were extremely helpful and even provided us with a generator when the power went down in the recent winds. The Garden has a lovely outside space for our aging Labrador and a sitting area for a glass of proscecco. We can not recommend this house highly enough, we both agreed we could happily live in it as it has such a lovely feel.

Beautiful, well situated find, starting with the extremely friendly owner's welcome, very generous welcoming gift basket, to the clean, very comfortable & surprisingly spacious accommodation, every single need was catered for. It was extremely well stocked, including an excellent, clean kitchen, warm & cosy throughout with plentiful hot water, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, there was an excellent fully enclosed garden with a generous patio & lawn & full access to the field boundaries on the farm which we respectfully used to walk our dogs.

We had a wonderful stay at the Garden House. The cottage is equipped with every thing you could wish for and finished to a high standard (the pictures on the website really don't do it justice). The garden was private and perfect for anyone like us with a dog. Scotland and the Northumberland coast with it's magnificent beaches are both within easy reach and the village is a short walk for all your essentials. The owners live on the farm and were there to welcome us and give us some useful information for our stay. All in all a really pleasant stay.

Our host was very welcoming and the Garden House itself exceeded our expectations. It was very warm and cosy but spacious. The local area provided us with plenty of opportunities to walk and explore, and interesting places to visit. The DVD collection was brilliant - if it had been raining, we'd have been happy to stay in and watch some of them! One of the best places we have stayed in.

We had an excellent few days at The Garden House and couldn't have needed more to enjoy our stay. The cottage was so well equipped and comfortable and the owners have thought of everything! Our two dogs loved the garden, being dachshunds they always find ways of escaping and the garden has been secured perfectly for complete peace of mind for us and we were able to relax 100%. The furnishings and interior are to a very high standard, it was very clean and everything was in perfect condition. We will definitely be back!
