The Retreat is a delightful, Victorian-style cottage resting as an attachment to the owner’s home right in the very heart of Wetheral. Decorated beautifully throughout with exquisite oak furnishings, the property is very light and airy with spacious rooms. Ideally, this cottage is for two couples or a family of three or four to get together in pleasant, tranquil surroundings and take a break from a busy work life. You will be impressed by the open sitting room with its sumptuous sofas, period-style features and lovely long views of the well-maintained front lawn. There is a door at the side of the sitting room which opens out onto a private yard for your personal use, where you can crack open a nice bottle of wine and soak up a summer evening. The kitchen/diner is fitted with beautiful units and an oven/hob unit built into the grand inglenook fireplace. Upstairs are fully-furnished, fresh, modern bedrooms and a bathroom, and also for your convenience there are extra storage cupboards at the top of the stairs. Everything you need is close by; a mixture of shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs, along with some of the best attractions. There is a whole wealth of historic places to visit in the surrounding area including Carlisle Castle, The Prior’s Tower and The Guildhall Museum, which is housed in the upstairs of Carlisle’s only medieval house. Take a gentle stroll along River Eden in the village; parts of the riverbank here are surrounded by ancient woodlands, including Wetheral Woods, owned by the National Trust. This well-located cottage is a great base whatever way you decide to make it memorable.

The village of Wetheral lies five miles from Carlisle in the north of Cumbria. With great transport links, Wetheral is overlooked by a restaurant, pub, village shop and tearooms. A short steep walk takes you past the church and remains of the abbey to the River Eden. To the east, the 19th century viaduct towers above the river with some of the best salmon fishing in the country. Carlisle – the Border City – is the main shopping, commercial and industrial centre in the northern half of Cumbria, with a museum, historic tours, and plenty of entertainment for you to enjoy at your own leisure.

Reviews

I booked 1710 cottage for short break with my husband and 13 year old daughter so that we could visit family in the nearby area. The cottage is just perfect and furnished to a really high standard . Loved the use of the log burner for the colder days We had And the sun trap of a beautiful garden on the sunnier days. The location is lovely and Secluded yet within easy reach Of Carlisle. We met The owner during our stay who was lovely and welcoming. She checked that we were enjoying our stay and that we had everything we needed and also provided us with lovely arrival treats . We will definitely be back

Beautiful spacious house with all amenities you will need including a smart tv & wifi. the village is beautiful also and the owner has left a detailed book listing walks, tourist information, details on the local pub which also sells food, also the local hotel has a bar and sells food, we ate and drank in both and can recommend them. there is also a restaurant with bar but it was shut when we were there so i cannot comment. the train station is a short walk away and it is literally 7 minutes on the train to Carlisle if you want an alcoholic drink somewhere busier. there's a local shop that also has a coffee shop but the Co-op is only 1.7 miles away and a 24 hour Tesco is 2.4 miles away so this location has everything we needed.

Situated in a picturesque village near Carlisle the cottage is attached to a grand house on the village green but has its own entrance and offers complete privacy and seclusion for a peaceful break. Beautifully decorated throughout with a fully equipped kitchen to luxurious lounge and bedrooms this property is indeed special.
