Set within peaceful countryside, beside the rippling River Manifold, is River Lodge. This detached cottage, formerly the gatehouse to the National Trust's Ilam Hall, offers one of the most picturesque locations in the Peak District. It oozes character from the outside in, with its stone walls and diamond-shaped mullion windows to latch doors, exposed beams and low ceiling on the stairs. The country cottage-style kitchen boasts a fabulous AGA range cooker, leading through to the dining room, which has plenty of space for six. Gather for a delicious dinner and later if you wish, take yourself off for a quiet read in the cosy snug. The sitting room enjoys an open fire adding warmth to those cold wintry evenings. If nothing takes your fancy on TV, simply sit with a drink and take in the pleasant views of the garden. Upstairs you have a king-size double room with a deep-soaking bath tub and double basin, followed by another double boasting a zip-and-link bed, giving you the option of twins on request. There is also a shower room on this floor and a walk-in wardrobe. Finally, the annexe adjacent to the cottage houses a king-size double bed with its own en-suite shower room. Outside, enjoy a spot of relaxation in the garden area benefitting with views of green pastures in the distance. Listen to the gushing sounds of the River Manifold, as it surges through the valley during the winter months. The cottage sits on the river bank and due to the nature of the river it is sometimes flowing and sometimes a dry riverbed. You are also welcome to use the field which backs onto the garden at the rear, although be mindful of the grazing sheep and cattle. From the cottage, there is a back gate leading to a concessionary walk, which stretches just over a mile along the River to Ilam Hall. Here you can enjoy a tasty treat from the tea room or grab a refreshing beverage at the bar within the youth hostel. For more of a challenge, take the 10-mile circular hike through breath-taking scenery featuring Thor's Cave and Wetton village from Ilam Park. For restaurants, pubs and antique shops, pay a visit to the nearby market towns of Ashbourne and Stoke on Trent, which is famous for The Potteries., whilst those holidaying with kids may find a day out at Alton Towers is just the thrill you need. Within this beautiful region of the Peak District you also have the delightful towns of Buxton and Bakewell, with Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall all worth a visit. This chocolate-box cottage offers an indulgent hideaway for you and your loved ones. This cottage can be booked with ref number 998679, making a total of 8 people.

This was our third stay and we can't wait to revisit . Pure relaxation and such a well equipped property. The owners have made this address a home from home . Only words of warning. The hot water is very hot. And the garden has insecurity for naughty escape artist pups. However the views , the birds , the walks , the comforts, the area, the log fire, the patio , the parking far far outweigh anything else . We look forward to another stay and want to thank the owners for making the stay perfect with the added touches on our arrival.

We have had the most fabulous break at River Lodge. The cottage itself is beautiful and spotlessly clean, the kitchen was fully equipped with everything and anything that you might need during your stay. Upon arrival we received a chilled bottle of Prosecco some delicious biscuits and some home-made cake which Julie had emailed me about previously to our stay to see if we were happy to receive (of course we were). The house and the grounds are incredibly well-kept and serviced all our needs. The views from the garden are breathtaking and It was so relaxing to sit out in the evening with the fire pit crackling away. We literally walked out of the garden to a number of different walking routes, we had a fantastic stroll along the river down to Ilam Village Where we stopped for a cup of tea at the Manifold café before continuing on to the stepping stones at Dove Dale (there is A great little ice cream and cake van at the car park before you head down to the stepping stones which the kids were over the moon about). There is plenty to do in the local area, we took a trip out one night and had a meal in Ashbourne and found it easy to get a taxi back and the price was extremely reasonable. We would highly recommend the cottage and have already booked again for next year for a two week stay.

Fantastic location for walks from the door. Accommodation itself very high standard. Clear and helpfull hosts who called by to check all was ok - which of course it was. Fully recommended.

Our week in this property has been fantastic. It is one of the most beautiful locations and properties we have ever stayed in. Everything you could possibly want was provided. The place is so cosy and warm. We managed to get out on some stunning local walks most days, but one day the rain never stopped but we were more than happy to stay in and enjoy this lovely house. Owners Julie and John were lovely and really welcoming. We have just got back today and are already looking to book again !
