For walkers, Orton Scar and the Howgills are an exciting prospect for an afternoon excursion, and it is easy to see why this beautiful landscape was so celebrated by renowned fell walker and author Alfred Wainwright. Further afield, the Settle to Carlisle Railway is a must see, and you can hop on board to enjoy the views from Appleby Station 10.5 miles away. Cross the gardens and enter the main hall where stone mullioned windows, wooden panelling and rustic furniture set the scene and discover the shared drawing room with its ornate wooden ceiling and cosy seating.
