Originally a threshing barn where the grain was separated, the open plan living space with its cosy wood burner, is where the wagon would have entered and the original narrow slit window is a feature of the room, although now thankfully glazed. There are attractive views over the valley and two walks from the barn so you may walk to Trapp or all the way into Llandeilo if you are feeling adventurous. When the bluebells are in flower the woods have a carpet of blue to admire. One mile from Trapp, on the western fringe of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Carreg Cennen is one of the few remaining privately owned castles in Wales. It was once voted Wales’ most romantic ruin and is open year round with tea rooms and a craft shop. The colourful and picturesque market town of Llandeilo is just a short drive and is scattered with a varied array of independent shops and a wide selection of places to eat, from a quick snack to à la carte meals. It has gained a reputation for being a paradise for foodies and shoppers alike. One of the oldest Welsh counties, Carmarthenshire has a spectacular rural landscape and is known as the ’Garden of Wales’. It is rich in myths and folklore, being the stronghold of one of the ancient kingdoms of Wales, and stories of Merlin, King Arthur and his knights, healing maidens from deep mountain lakes, dragons, and saintly miracles abound. There is so much to explore; why not visit the National Trust’s fascinating Dinefwr Park and Castle and Newton House, or the National Botanic Garden of Wales, with its huge glass dome, the largest single span glasshouse in the world. Poised on the landscape like a giant raindrop, it protects and conserves some of the most endangered plants on the planet. The county has six of the finest bucket and spade beaches in Europe and one of the longest in Wales at ’Cefn Sidan’, Pembrey, easily reached in 45 minutes by car. When you return to Gelli Barn after a day out exploring, you will have all the modern comforts to come home to and a private decked terrace overlooking the natural garden and woods and from where you can relax and enjoy a drink. Here, you can sit and soak up the peaceful atmosphere and you may be lucky enough to see the wild deer that are sometimes seen on the land. Shop and restaurant 2½ miles pub 2 miles. Free WiFi
