This pretty fishing village owes its very existence to the sea. Built mainly in the 1820s, during the salmon and herring fishing ’boom’, its attractive white washed cottages along the sand and rocky shoreline have been lovingly restored over the years and the village is now a quiet and relaxing backwater that provides an ideal base for visitors to enjoy its quiet charm. There are lovely walks along the shoreline which extend around the coastline to neighbouring seaboard villages direct from the cottage. Sea fishing is also possible directly off the pier, which is 100 yards from Seashells. The nearby village of Portmahomack, 1½ miles away, has a superb, sweeping, sandy beach with stunning views to the Sutherland mountains beyond. The village also boasts a shop, café, bistro, the highly acclaimed seafood restaurant and a lovely traditional links golf course which is open to visitors. This area is also renowned for its archaeological sites and at the nearby Tarbet Discovery Centre, there is a fascinating display of Pictish, Norse and medieval artefacts. Ten minutes’ drive away lies the oldest Royal Burgh of Scotland, Tain. Predominantly built in local mellow sandstone it is a charming historic town and offers an excellent selection of small shops, supermarkets, restaurants, cafés and pubs, as well as a wide variety of sporting and recreational facilities to include tennis courts, golf club, bowls club, public gardens and interesting local museum, all of which are available to visitors.
