Only a short drive away, the town stands on the site of an ancient Roman fort which crosses the River Tees. The medieval ruins of the castle still stand on the banks of the river and are well worth a visit. With a weekly farmers market, plenty of places to eat and drink and also a variety of shops, galleries and antiques stores, there really is something to offer for all tastes. The very popular Bowes Museum is also worth a visit; with the ever changing exhibitions all year round, a quaint tea shop, café and beautiful grounds to enjoy, guests will find themselves surrounded by much beauty and history. The cottage is also brilliantly located for guests who enjoy walking or cycling, with nearby attractions including the breathtaking High Force, England’s highest waterfall.
