One of a handful of tiny villages and hamlets in the area, Boltongate is ideally located for exploring both countryside and coastline. Browse the independent shops, cafes, pubs and bars of Cockermouth, before continuing south to Bassenthwaite for a lakeside picnic. Just north of the lake, the Lakes Distillery produces artisan whisky, gin and vodka and runs fascinating tours concluded with a trip to the tasting room for a quick tipple. Keen walkers will enjoy the challenge of nearby Skiddaw, 14 miles away, with its heather clad slopes and magnificent elevated views. Or, for a change of scene, head 14 miles north to reach the Solway Coast, home to nature reserves and sandy beaches.
