The history of Wilfred Manor is fascinating. The earliest recorded Lord of the Manor was Ernist in 1050 when Painswick was known as Wyke. Over centuries the Manor dominated local life and Pain FitzJohn, the Lord from 1121 to 1137, is thought to have given his name to the town, hence ‘Pain’s-wyke’. The original Manor was demolished in 1445 and rebuilt and was fully functioning as a court until 1831. The original stocks can be seen outside the gates. King Charles I stayed at the Manor prior to the Siege of Gloucester in 1743. Throughout this magnificent property, you will discover fabulous characterful rooms with enormous fireplaces, beams and vaulted ceilings, all nods to its intriguing past. Each of its sensational rooms offers stunning garden and landscape views, including the woods above Slad Valley and the famous church spire of Painswick.

The Manor offers many entertainment spaces, all of which offer luxurious furnishings and a fabulous atmosphere. The Great Room is the original Court Room. It boasts a stunning, large open fire, original wood panelled walls, sumptuous furnishings, beautiful draped curtains and a 55 inch television with Sky channels and a DVD player. The beautiful library enjoys original flooring, an enormous open fire and a plentiful supply of books. Guests can relax and unwind with views over the gardens. It is the perfect place for a quiet read of the Sunday newspapers! The spacious family room boasts a large 55 inch TV with Sky channels, a DVD player and a Bose sound system. With original flooring and beams and a roaring open fire, this is a perfect place for a chilled movie night! The exquisite dining room can seat 16 guests comfortably and boasts beautiful views over the garden. The large, stylish kitchen is very well equipped with oversize appliances, perfect for the chefs in your group. It offers a beautiful breakfast table and views of the garden. The Manor also enjoys a striking ‘restaurant’ room which is used only when the catering team have been requested. In addition, guests have use of the excellent snooker and games room. It offers a professional full size snooker table, many board games, a television with Bose speakers and a bar with a fridge, ice machine, sink and bar stools.

Wilfred Manor can comfortably accommodate up to twenty-two guests. The extraordinary bedroom suites have all recently been modernised and the bathrooms refurbished. The bedrooms each have their own unique names and style but are all as equally luxurious, a dreamy nights sleep is guaranteed! The eleven bedrooms are set across the three different levels, all either feature double, king or super-king beds and boast their own private shower or bathroom facilities.

The outside space is as equally impressive, the private 10m pool is both heated and covered, making it ideal for all weathers. The whole group are bound to enjoy making a splash in there! There are four acres of ground to explore, with plenty of room for games and multiple terraces designed with al fresco dining in mind.

For those looking to really relax, private dining with the in-house chef can be arranged and can cater to you and your family or friends. It is located at the top of the Slad Valley with stunning panoramic views. Painswick is an historic wool town, known as ‘The Queen of the Cotwolds’. It is surrounded by some of Gloucestershire’s most wonderful countryside and features many gorgeous buildings built with the mellow Cotswold stone from the local quarry on Painswick Beacon. It sits halfway along the Cotswold Way National Trail with marvellous hikes all around. Painswick Beacon enjoys magnificent views across the Severn Valley to the Welsh mountains.

Within easy reach of Wilfred Manor, you will find the pretty villages of Sheepscombe, Edge and Slad, Barnwood Park and Arboretum, the Alney Island Nature Reserve and the cathedral city of Gloucester.
