Isle of Whithorn, no longer an island, is on the southernmost tip of the Machars Peninsula, a conservation area. Its harbour is popular for fishing for crabs, lobsters and scallops. The area is steeped in history with Mesolithic and Iron Age forts and an 11th century chapel. Bookworms can visit Wigtown, Scotland's first book town with over a dozen book shops.
